INTRODUCTION
The Medical Clinic Assistant prepares patients for examinations, performs routine lab procedures and tests, and gathers and records information into patient records. The Medical Clinic Assistant is also responsible for the upkeep of examination rooms and equipment. This classification provides nursing care in the clinic setting when procedures do not require licensure by the state.
EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Prepare, review and update patient's Electronic Health Records. Take vital signs. Give injections as directed. Perform routine laboratory tests such as urine dipsticks, pregnancy tests, PKUs, rapid step test, stool occult blood, and urine cultures. Prepare other tests for shipping. Perform screening tests such as EKG, Peak Flow Meter, spirometry, nebulizer, pulse oximeter, and tympanogram. Record test results in patient's Electronic Health Records.
Maintain and prepare clinic supplies. Sterilize equipment. Clean and maintain lab equipment and supplies. Prepare exam room for next use.
Provide educational information to patients as directed. Review, maintain, and order resources and educational materials.
Assist illiterate, hearing impaired and other disabled patients to complete history or other parts of the medical record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of routine clinic practices and procedures.
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of lab equipment.
Knowledge of testing procedures.
Knowledge of equipment terminology, drug terminology, and supply terminology.
Skill in obtaining and labeling specimens, performing routine patient care procedures, and performing routine testing procedures.
Able to make decisions independently in accordance with established policies.
Able to manage time effectively.
Able to establish and maintain records, reports and data.
Able to courteously meet and deal with co-workers, patients and families, laboratory personnel.
Able to accurately follow verbal and written instructions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Two years' clinic experience as a Medical Clinic Assistant OR four year's medical clinic experience OR a satisfactory combination of experience and training.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Medical Clinic Assistant plans and carries out patient care independently in accordance with clinic policy and instructions from the treatment team. The supervisor is available to assist with unusual situations which do not have clear procedures, but the employee carries through the full range of routine assignments without prompting.
GUIDELINES
Work is performed within established department policies, procedures, and protocols. Numerous medical and laboratory reference materials also provide specific guidance. The employee uses some judgment to independently decide between established alternatives.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a clinic setting and may involve bending, twisting, stretching, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing, and walking. There is regular and recurring exposure to infection and contagious diseases. Special gloves, gowns, or masks are required as safety precautions.

Tillamook County offers a generous benefits package to regular employees working 20 hours or more of the regularly scheduled work week.
Part-time regular employees working more than 20 hours but less than 40 hours will receive a pro-rated amount based on their regularly scheduled time.
Employees are eligible for insurance benefits the first day of the month following a full 30 days of employment.
