The Office of Academic Affairs provides oversight of the education curriculum and enables the success of students and faculty in teaching and learning, research, and creative expression. The Opportunity:
The Assistant Director of Pre-Clerkship Education is a leadership position that works in partnership with the M1/M2 Assistant Dean and the Director for Academic Affairs. The Assistant Director manages, directs, and oversees the planning/development, operational oversight, and supervision of the first and second-year course modules in the MD curriculum affecting approximately 240 students, specifically curriculum related to M1 course modules, M2 course modules, Practice of Medicine, and Community of Practice. The Assistant Director will be responsible for building and maintaining institutional faculty relationships and finding solutions to student-related matters. The Assistant Director develops, implements, and provides leadership for programs or projects as required by Academic Affairs, such as curriculum tracking and monitoring, as it applies to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The Assistant Directors will directly supervise the Pre-Clerkship Academic Program Coordinators.

Responsibilities:
  • Directly supervise, evaluate, hire, retain, and provide M1/M2 module coordinators professional development opportunities. Works in conjunction with the Director for Academic Affairs and COM HR department to initiate and support the hiring process for direct reports and serve as a resource in the hiring process for other Academic Affairs recruitment efforts.
  • Coordinates the Practice of Medicine 1 and 2 (P-1/P-2) modules and P-1/P-2 related clinical skills instructional content and delivery. Oversees P-1/P-2 daily operations; Assists with curriculum and program review, development, and management-related first and second-year P-1/P-2 modules, auxiliary activities, and affiliated units. Coordinates instructional sessions, workshops, and/or events as well as communication plans for P-1/P-2 modules.
  • Works directly with the M1/M2 Assistant Dean for Medical Education, the Director for Academic Affairs, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to plan, develop, and implement pre-clerkship curriculum and programs for approximately 240 M1/M2 students.
  • Assists with the completion of curriculum tracking and monitoring as it applies to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Responsible for developing and implementing operational and logistical plans and medical student policies for the pre-clerkship MD program curricula to meet academic and accreditation standards. Disseminate policies and changes related to the pre-clerkship curriculum to appropriate constituents (e.g., Student Affairs Office, student body, faculty).
  • Develops measures to streamline various processes related to first and second-year modules and affiliated units. Directs the assigned area of responsibility to ensure that established goals and objectives are communicated and attained within first and second-year modules/affiliated units.
  • Assist with student performance assessment and program evaluation for the pre-clerkship curriculum by serving as a resource, attending meetings, and providing documentation for reporting.
  • Serves as the lead point of contact for the medical students, staff, and faculty regarding various complex issues and problems related to the MD program. Situations vary, but resolution requires conceptual knowledge of COM policies and principles and a broad understanding of multiple related disciplines and general management.
  • Maintains current and develops new recruitment efforts to engage volunteer/outside faculty in first- and second-year Practice of Medicine modules (P-1 and P-2), managing inquiries, following up on leads/referrals, sharing module information and orienting them to curricular activities, connecting new faculty with module leadership, facilitating onboarding, etc. Works closely with faculty to generate and track unit/module assignments faculty service, including core, adjunct, and volunteer/affiliated faculty.
  • Direct M1/M2 coordinators to complete projects affecting the entire M1 and M2 per-clerkship curriculum. Examples include coordination of proctors, syllabus review, instructional design of learning management of systems, and assisting with emergency management.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to the timely completion of university and college-required training and updates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience with at least 1+ year(s) of leadership experience.

  • Ability to successfully organize detailed information and plan and create/organize detailed schedules.
  • Time-management skills; ability to effectively prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
