Position Summary
The HSE Engineer will assist the QHSE Manager/Supervisor with effectively implementing and maintaining HSE management systems across the site. The successful candidate will have a positive attitude towards safety and be able to actively identify hazards and suggest improvements. The HSE Engineer will be responsible to exemplify the Cardinal Rules & Safety Fundamentals of Bureau Veritas and help to communicate and uphold them with all employees.
Major Roles & Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor compliance with the company’s Health, Safety & Environmental Management System.
- Ensure that all employees are aware of and comply with the company’s Health, Safety & Environmental policies, procedures, and work instructions.
- Promote a positive safety culture within the workplace by leading by example and demonstrating a visible commitment to HSE.
- Organize and facilitate monthly HSE committee meetings
- Gather and analyze data for quarterly site Carbon Footprint Reporting
- Maintain, review, and improve site HSE documentation
- Facilitate external CPR, AED, first aid, and other required training
- Assist with health/safety emergency response planning, drills, and skills sessions
- Assist with the hazardous waste disposal process and hazardous sample management process.
- Coordinate and monitor periodic hazardous materials inspections.
- Facilitate and coordinate the universal and electronic recycling program for the facility.
- Support and lead sections of the annual Management Systems audit to ISO 14001 and 45001
- Facilitate safety inspections of all departments on site and help to ensure that actions are taken to address any and all findings
- Assist with ensuring site compliance with applicable regulations and standards
- Administer the respiratory protection program and facilitate respirator fit testing for applicable employees
- Facilitate the Job Safety Analysis program for the site and author JSA’s as applicable
- Conduct safety walks throughout the site and facilitate actions in response to outcomes
- Perform HSE risk assessments of new/existing testing or processes in the lab, as needed
- Prepare and lead employee training on HSE topics and maintain the site HSE training plan, according to regulatory and internal requirements
- Investigate all injuries incurred on-site and perform full root cause analysis and suggest improvement to prevent reoccurrence. Work with site management to validate the effectiveness of the corrective and preventative actions.
- Assist the HSE manager/supervisor with liaising between management and external safety agencies, such as fire and insurance personnel
- Perform other duties as may be assigned
- Follow the guidelines set forth in the Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, Inc Quality, Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental policies and procedures
- Comply with Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, Inc management systems in accordance with ISO 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Understanding of federal, state, and city safety requirements, including OSHA.
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory standards and the ability to interpret and apply new regulations
- Strong knowledge of ISO 14001 and 45001
- Lead/Internal auditor certification for ISO 14001 and 45001 preferred
- Excellent competence with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation
- Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and project managers
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at the same time while meeting deadlines.
- Training and/or certification in HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT, OSHA30
Experience and Educational Background Required for the Job
- 3 to 5 years - experience in an HSE field
- Bachelor's degree in health and safety or a related field OR HSE-related Certification (ie. ABIH, BCSP, CSP) is preferred
