Job Title: Kitchen Assistant

Duration: Full Summer Season May 24th-August 6th

Reports to: Leads & Supports

Position Description:

You will live in a dorm with up to fifteen fellow staff members, this dorm is a “staff only” dorm that you will share with the programming staff, substitute staff, and the photographer. The atmosphere of the living space and the work space is dependent on the mindset of staff, please come into this experience with a growth mindset and a willingness to collaborate with others. The Kitchen Assistants are expected to aid the Kitchen Lead & Support in preparing, serving and cleaning three meals per day (Sunday evening- Friday afternoon). The Kitchen Assistants are expected to prepare a salad bar at both lunch and dinner meals as well as aid in dishwashing and cleaning following each meal. Kitchen assistants must help to uphold the ACA and Health Code Regulations. The entire kitchen staff is part of a larger team, therefore you will also be trained and prepared to assist in any camp emergency, this will be done through the participation of training week. Kitchen Assistants may share many tasks as included below or may be designated into roles for food preparation, dishwashing, and dining hall service, this is dependent on the methods of efficiency decided by the Lead & Support.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

Tatiyee Food Service

  • Assist in the preparation of food as the menu is directed by the Kitchen Lead & Support.
  • Food preparation can include but is not limited to- peeling, washing, cutting, or mixing ingredients.
  • Preparation and setup of the salad bar for lunches and dinners.
  • Prior to each meal the Kitchen Assistants will prep all the dining tables with the dishes, utensils, and supplies needed.
  • Kitchen Assistants will also aid the lead and support to set the coffee bar, condiments table, and the serving station up for each meal.
  • Upon the completion of the meal you will work as a team to store food and leftovers at proper temperatures, labeled, and in proper containers.

Kitchen Sanitation & Maintenance

  • Clean and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas according to ACA & health code regulations.
  • Wash all dishes, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to regulated washing methods and temperatures.
  • Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camp’s policies & procedures.
  • Aid the Lead & Support on food delivery days to store all food and supplies properly

Travel Meals & Emergency Food Preparation

  • Work with cooks and other staff in reviewing pack meal requests to ensure adequate and accurate amounts and variety.
  • In the event of an evacuation the kitchen staff is responsible for packing and preparing as much food as indicated by the Lead and Executive Director at the time of need.

Physical Aspects of the Job

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds including unloading food, carry trays of dishes, lifting supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Visual ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards.
  • Physical ability to operate kitchen equipment according to safe recommended methods.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).

Staff Meetings

  • Sunday Meetings:Full Staff- prepare to take notes and listen attentively to leadership & returners sharing pertinent information on specific campers' needs. Adding notes when appropriate.
  • Night Program Meetings:Night Program Committees consist of a Dorm Lead and Support as well as a team of counselors and one program counselor. This team will work collaboratively combining their various skills and knowledge. This is an opportunity to work with several departments and encourage creativity and enthusiasm among the full team. Kitchen staff members are able to volunteer for any night program committee if desired, but this is not required!
  • Kitchen Meetings:utilizing your insight gained throughout each week on kitchen operations, food preparation, campers, programs, and full camp operations, the team will pose areas for improvement along (with possible solutions). In addition the team will work to identify strengths of the week (pluses). All notes taken should be developed in the lens of Tatiyee’s mission. The lead and support will bring these points to the leadership meeting each Thursday night.
  • Friday Meetings:Aid in weekly summarization of Site Based Team (SBT) resolutions and final thoughts on the week. Including reminders for the next week.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary, Internship

Pay: $450.00 - $550.00 per week
