Job Description

Requisition Id 10476

Overview:

The National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oakridge National Laboratory leads scientific and technological breakthroughs to confront some of the nation’s most difficult security challenges. We develop interdisciplinary applications needed for the security of our nation today and target our vision on how these challenges may manifest themselves in a decade or more. The Collection Science and Engineering Group (CSE) of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) specializes in the development of new techniques and technologies to collect and observe samples of interest in the environment. Our mission is to apply scientific and engineering principles to conceptualize, design, fabricate, deploy, and validate advanced collection systems. The CSE group members bring expertise in areas such as: environmental collector development and deployment, the nuclear fuel cycle, radiation detection, atmospheric transport and dispersion, as well as others to help prevent the proliferation of nuclear materials. This multidisciplinary team brings experts in their respective fields together to test and deploy systems in austere environments to enable world-class scientific experimentation and enhanced national and international security.

The Collection Science and Engineering Group is seeking applicants for a full-time mechanical engineer to help understand and research complex flow fields and their impact on effluent plumes. The applicant must also have a strong background in developing and validating models associated with the complex flows.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

If you are the right person for this challenge, you will be motivated to work in the lab, field settings, and in an office environment with a focus on nonproliferation research and development. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Complex terrain flow research and development.
  • Designing experiments and building test apparatus to examine complex flow fields and their impact on effluent fate, transport, and dispersion.
  • Design and develop models which accurately depict flows observed in the laboratory.
  • Mechanical and electrical assembly and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with scientists, technicians, and craft personnel, both at ORNL and other DOE sites.
  • Comfortable with CONUS travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D in mechanical engineering or a related field of study.
  • Ability and commitment to writing reports on weekly, monthly, and project summary basis.
  • Ability to collaborate and write journal publications and conference presentations.
  • Time management and organizational skills are paramount to this position to ensure the successful development and deployment of the group’s technologies.
  • Working independently and with a team in dynamic situations.
  • Working with mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Well-honed communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with co-workers, customers, design, research, development, and vendor personnel.
  • Ability to work with technical and research project teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the design/build/test/analysis of velocity and scalar fields of 3D contaminant plumes in complex/realistic environments.
  • Demonstrated capability to match experimental data with partnered computational model validation efforts.
  • Technical leadership experience forming effective small teams to address complex data collection efforts.
  • Established record of partnering with various governmental agencies across DOE, DOD, and other agencies.
  • Self-starter able to set priorities to accomplish goals and meet milestones independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirement:

This position requires the applicant to have the ability to obtain and retain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
