Overview:

Medical Assistant/Interpreter, Virginia Hospital Center Pediatrics

Pediatric Center, a service of VHC Health, is dedicated to its mission to provide a Medical Home offering comprehensive, affordable, quality healthcare in a culturally-sensitive environment to children, birth through 18 years of age, living in Arlington County with family incomes at or below 200% of Federal Poverty Level. Located in a convenient, accessible location in South Arlington, APC features a full-time staff including pediatricians, nurse practitioners, nurses, care coordinators, and behavioral health professionals.

The Medical Assistant/Interpreter (MAI )works closely with physicians, nurses, and support staff to provide patient care functions which may include: greeting and doing initial medical assessment of patients, assisting with procedures and treatments, obtaining lab specimen, and helping with patient /parent education. The MAI provides interpreting services to clinical staff during Triage, exams and advice calls. The MAI also provides administrative and clerical support to physicians and nurses.

The MAI must be able to recognize when he or she should act independently and when to seek help from physicians, nurses, or other staff. The MAI is a team player, responsive to the needs of the patients and other staff. The MAI works efficiently and effectively, with a clear sense of professional priorities.

The MAI is guided by APC personnel policies and procedures. The MAI is an enthusiastic representative of APC in the community. The MAI possesses a pleasant temperament. The MAI communicates effectively and thoughtfully with patients and co-workers. The MAI participates in formulating policies and procedures, attends staff meetings, and participates in Quality Improvement meetings.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Has evidence of appropriate training and education. Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
  • Pediatric experience strongly preferred.
  • Technical Skill: Possess good organizational skills to include the use of computers & other office machines. Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Windows 95
  • Bilingual in Spanish required.
  • Must be familiar with terminology used in a clinic setting.
Responsibilities:
  • Provides prompt and professional contact and initial medical information gathering of patients presenting at APC in person and via telephone during office hours.
  • Creates and inputs clinical data in EMR to ensure the provider has all necessary information available during patient encounters.
  • Conduct telephone triage assisted by protocols as directed by the pediatricians, with appropriate RN or MD supervision.
  • Conducts vulnerable population management such as identifying patients with language/interpreter needs. Provides interpreter assistance as required, ensuring that patient concerns are accurately conveyed to the clinical staff, and that clinical advice is conveyed to and understood by the parent/patient. Interpreting services may be used during telephone advice calls, triage, examinations and consultations. Translates written materials as requested.
  • Prepares necessary forms and reports. Prepares and mails medical record release requests after provider review.
  • In addition to the essential functions described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based upon APC needs or requirements, and the MA's training, experience and observed proficiency.
