Job Description

The Clinical Research Services (CRS) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) integrates eight clinical sites across San Francisco and Oakland that provide an array of adult and pediatric services and translate promising research ideas into successful protocols. The CRS provides an array of services, such as Nursing Services and Sample Processing Laboratories. The CRS is the largest NIH funded program in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

Under supervision of the Administrative Nurse, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant assists in the delivery of care to patients being seen at the CRS Clinical Research Unit.

Performs assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of services provided to patients within the center. Required to follow research protocols and maintain all necessary documentation. Works as a team member with other staff and consistently projects a professional, caring, and courteous demeanor.

Note: This position requires a physical/health screen.

Department Description

The Office of the Associate Vice-Chancellor of Clinical Research (AVC-CR), a division within the Office of Research, provides executive leadership for the UCSF clinical research community to support enterprise-wide administration, infrastructure, and services. This includes representation of the UCSF clinical research community to the Vice Chancellor of Research (VCR), other UCSF leadership, and extramural stakeholders.

The office of the AVC-CR works with campus clinical research leadership to improve clinical research support across sites, schools, and disciplines. The office directs and facilitates the development and implementation of innovative programs and activities that address the priorities of the clinical research community. These include programs in clinical trials operations, enterprise-wide biobanking, clinical trial data sharing, and additional areas of need. The AVC-CR also directs and serves as principal investigator for the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). CTSI spans the four UCSF health science schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry), the UCSF Graduate Division, and collaborating affiliates of UCSF.

The mission of CTSI is to facilitate clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. CTSI does this by providing infrastructure, services and training to make research more efficient. CTSI develops broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment. CTSI has $26M in annual budget from multiple funding sources (NIH, institutional, philanthropy, industry and other) and includes over 20 interdisciplinary programs.

The clinical component of CTSI, Clinical Research Services (CRS) integrates the activities of multiple clinical research sites that provide adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatient clinical services to support the translation of promising clinical research ideas into successful protocols. CRS provides an array of core research services such as adult and pediatric Nursing Services.

Required Qualifications

  • Three years of appropriate experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Current Phlebotomy license (CPT)
  • Skills and experience to successfully complete blood draws with a population with high rates of mental illness, substance use, histories of ill health, and injection drug use
  • Database experience
  • High School diploma; or equivalent experience
  • Timely data entry of all processing-related information from the laboratory reference forms, CRO Requisitions, and shipping air bills into the sample processing laboratory information management system Database. This information contains PHI so all necessary precautions must be in place
  • Time management skills and the ability to follow protocols to ensure that samples are processed within the appropriate time window (ability to assign priority to the most perishable samples
  • Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments, and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians
  • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Windows

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with APeX (EPIC electronic medical record system)
  • Prior experience with Freezerworks Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Good Clinical Practices and CITI training
  • Prior clinical research experience
  • Ability to flex up work hours to 100%

License/Certification

  • Current Phlebotomy License (CPT)
