Job Description Summary

Incumbent will function as research assistant on a federally funded research study centered on comparing two weight loss interventions for African American adolescents and their caregivers. The research assistant will conduct research assessments with 12-19 year old adolescents and their caregivers in their homes in Charleston and the surrounding area. Responsibilities will include scheduling appointments, obtaining informed consent, measuring research participants’ height and weight, obtaining and disposing of a finger prick blood sample, administering computer-based tasks, and facilitating online survey completion. Flexibility and willingness to work a flexible schedule and work with adolescents and their parents/caregivers on evenings and weekends is required. Position requires the use of a personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement. Position is open to applicants residing in Charleston and surrounding counties. Experience working with adolescents and parents strongly preferred. Must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills as well as comfort working with ethnic minority youth.

Work Schedule:
M-F, 8:30AM – 5:00PM

Job Duties:

  • 35% - Track the recruitment, screening, and enrollment of research participants. Coordinate, schedule and conduct consent appointments online or in families’ homes or other community-based locations convenient to family while maintaining adherence to regulatory procedures. Track recruitment and generate basic recruitment reports for research team.
  • 30% - Coordinate research participant data collection appointments. Conduct data collection appointments in families’ homes or other community-based locations convenient to family. Schedule study visits in conjunction with protocol times lines.
  • 15% - Complete research related tasks including data entry. Assist with the creation of simple data collection forms (case report forms). Prepare, ship, and maintain inventory of finger prick blood sample specimens and supplies.
  • 10% - Engage in professional development activities and ongoing training and supervision.
  • 5% - Troubleshoot technology (e.g. Fitbit synching), to facilitate data collection.
  • 5% - Other duties as assigned.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: A high school diploma and four years of relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience.
