JMT is seeking a highly motivated Senior Traffic Engineer to lead and grow a traffic section in Texas, while collaborating with all eight offices within Texas and across JMT’s footprint. Based in the San Antonio, McKinney, Houston, or Round Rock Office, the successful candidate will be a technical leader in traffic engineering and be required to engage in business development activities including proposal writing as well as fostering existing and developing new market opportunities. Responsibilities also include managing and designing a variety of traffic related projects and services. Established client relationships are also expected.


The successful candidate will be well-versed across the traffic engineering discipline with demonstrated modeling, design, and project management experience in traffic planning, analysis, and design. The successful candidate will be expected to effectively oversee and mentor staff and perform, coordinate, and manage a variety of traffic related engineering projects or task assignments including but not limited to traffic signal plans, signing and pavement marking plans, crash analysis, planning studies, and traffic analysis and studies. Work may also include roadway lighting and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) plans. Coordination with clients, contractors, outside consultants, government agencies and project stakeholders is also expected.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate strategic growth plan with office managers and practice leaders
  • Establish and grow market presence in Texas through marketing and business development
  • Manage financial budgets and allocate resources accordingly
  • Lead and contribute to the production of proposals
  • Serve as a technical expertise resource to project managers and technical staff
  • Establish resource staffing needs
  • Interview and hire staff for the section and assist with the region
  • Perform performance reviews for staff

Required Skills
  • Candidates must be capable of working on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced team oriented environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must
  • Applicant must have a general understanding of design and plan preparation using MicroStation, Open Roads Designer, and various applicable traffic engineering software packages, and be proficient in MS Office and ProjectWise.


Required Experience
  • Job requires minimum 12 years of experience in traffic engineering design, planning and analysis
  • BSCE from ABET accredited engineering program
  • Texas Registered Professional Engineer
  • Certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer preferred
  • Familiarity with the policies, publications, and practices of TxDOT
  • Experience with TxDOT as well as experience working with other local government agencies across the state.
  • Experience using one or more traffic analysis and simulation modeling software is preferred

Working Conditions

This is a predominantly an office-based position with occasional field investigations. Travel based on client and project needs and between JMT offices is required. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid. and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs.) may be required as needed.
