What is the role? We have an opportunity for a Materials Researcher to lead the management and growth of our materials collection and inspire the future of Apple Softgoods products. You should be an exceptionally organized, detail-oriented and creative individual and passionate about textiles, nonwovens, coatings, composites, and other soft materials. You should be comfortable operating at the intersection between art and engineering, communicating often with both technical and non-technical audiences. You should be eager to research new materials and suppliers, grow your industry network, and educate your colleagues about the unique materials you bring into the collection.

Key Qualifications

  • Strong background in softgoods materials (textiles, coated fabrics, nonwovens, composites); familiar with various textile constructions and major industry players.
  • Skilled in visually inspecting materials and identifying key attributes.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with experience maintaining, growing and purging an inventory preferred.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced culture; strong customer-centric mindset.
  • Creative, resourceful personality preferred to lead educational and outreach efforts across multiple mediums (oral presentations, visual displays, written white papers, material showcases).
  • Familiarity with technical terms and testing methods for assessing softgoods material performance preferred.

Description

Manage and continuously update material collection, including formatting samples, labeling samples, cataloging new materials in a database, and culling collection for unused and out-of-date materials. Work closely with material engineers and product designers to build portfolios of materials for early concepts of various Apple products. Establish relationships with industry vendors and track release of unique/novel technologies and products. Maintain physical library space, including updating rotating displays to highlight new materials or previous collections. Compose bimonthly newsletters and organize showcases to highlight technologies to the Softgoods organization. Collaborate with technical staff to translate manufacturer claims into measurable quantities; approach material categorization with a data-driven mindset.

Pay & Benefits

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $130,000 and $242,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

    Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs.
