Job Description

GitHub helps companies, organizations, and groups of individuals succeed by allowing them to build better software, together. The successful launch of GitHub Copilot in June 2022 has demonstrated the possibilities of AI-assisted software development.

The engineering organization is now looking for developers to join the Copilot IDE team to work on the different editors that Copilot supports.

The Copilot team currently has three subteams:

  • IDE: Responsible for delivering the GitHub Copilot IDE extension in a range of supported editors. Currently, these are Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, the JetBrains suite of editors (such as IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm), and Vim/Neovim.
  • Model Improvement: Responsible for improving the quality of the code suggested by Copilot.
  • Foundations: Responsible for the Copilot backend services, integration into GitHub proper, and data pipelines.

The Copilot IDE team has close partnerships with the teams responsible for Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code within Microsoft’s Developer Division. It also has strong links with GitHub Next, a research team within GitHub investigating the future of software development, where Copilot was originally incubated.

The Copilot team is highly distributed and the right candidate will thrive in an environment of asynchronous communication. We expect you to have excellent written communication skills and be able to create working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop new features for the Copilot Vim/Neovim extension.
  • Contribute to existing and new IDE plugins that deliver the GitHub Copilot functionality.
  • Collaborate closely with other parts of the wider Copilot team.
  • Explore new ways of presenting Copilot’s output, collaborating with external IDE teams as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • At least eight years of experience in professional software development.
  • At least two years of professional development experience in one of the following fields:
    • Developer tooling
    • Program/static analysis
    • Compilers and compiler construction
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience developing larger Vim/Neovim plugins in Vimscript.
  • Development experience with TypeScript, Java, or C#.
  • Experience developing IDE or editor tooling.
  • Interest in modern AI/machine learning technologies and program synthesis in particular.

Minimum salary of $118,100 to a maximum of $313,300
