About Us:
Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multi-program laboratory applying state of the art science and practical, high-value, cost-effective solutions to complex technical problems to protect the nation. Situated in southwest South Carolina, SRNL is located approximately 20 minutes from Augusta, Georgia (home of the annual Master’s Golf Tournament) and 30 minutes from Fort Gordon (home of the new US Army Cyber Command).

The complex is one hour from South Carolina's Capital: Columbia, within three hours of Charleston's beaches, and just a couple of hours from Greenville/Spartanburg, SC.

Aiken is known for its famous thoroughbred horses, southern hospitality, growing community, thriving school district, numerous parks and golf courses, great weather, spacious avenues, and historical large and impressive homes.

Position Summary:
This leadership position will provide execution management of R&D personnel on a daily basis to support new and existing missions within the Environmental and Legacy Management Directorate.

Responsibilities include execution of R&D scope encompassing project management of schedules, budgets, and development and utilization of personnel and facilities. Assist the Division Director in developing and implementing business growth strategies and technology development. Manage work control and quality assurance aspects of the technical work. Work directly with SRNL program and division management to define technical, personnel and administrative requirements to meet SRNL technical and national programmatic needs in the areas of glass, ceramic, and cementitious materials and process development, which constitute a significant portion of the R&D scope.

Additionally, collaborate and integrate with current initiatives and future program development in the areas of corrosion science, metallurgy and materials characterization. Strong communication skills are needed as the individual will work closely with SRNL program and portfolio managers to be a strategic partner in advancing SRNL wide research programs (e.g., Radioactive Material Packaging Programs, Waste Processing, Energy Security Programs, National and Homeland Security Programs, and Environmental Management Programs). An ability to collaboratively engage with customers internal and external to DOE is essential.

The Manager will support professional skills growth for employees and promote personnel visibility to maintain and develop new customers and capabilities. Perform HR management of approximately 15-25 technical staff, including salary administration, subcontracts, performance reviews, and career development. Provide day to day supervision and policy enforcement of all assigned personnel. Ensure that adequate resource/staffing are available to meet customer needs and forecast future staffing and critical skills needed to support existing and new programs. Provide technical direction and focus of R&D activities to assure delivery of high-quality products on time and within budget.

Basic Education Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in applicable science or engineering discipline (see preferred qualifications below) plus 10+ years of relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications

Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. or Master's degree in applicable science or engineering discipline preferred (Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry).

Demonstrated experience leading Research and Development activities for technology development and deployment.

Publication record and peer recognition as an expert is a plus.
