Duties

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develops a documentation strategy and initial scope for a new web and social media digital archive that embraces the complexities and first-person perspectives of American women.
  • Convenes and coordinates subject specialists at NMAH, other units at the Smithsonian, and external partners to define collecting areas and identify potential collecting opportunities.
  • Identifies and applies digital archiving tools and technologies to capture, manage and preserve web-based collections.
  • Collaborates with staff across the museum and the Smithsonian to establish methodologies, policies and workflows for the collection, management, preservation of and access to web and social media content.
  • Organizes, contextualizes and describes digital records, bringing logical order to the material and making it usable by and accessible to scholars, researchers and NMAH staff.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:



Education: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements qualifications above all applicants must also meet the following selective placement factor (SPF):

Knowledge of current web archiving, digital preservation, and electronic records management technologies and best practices for the collection and preservation of web and social media content.


In addition to meeting the basic requirements and selective placement factor above applicants must also must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience:
Grade 11: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as: 1) managing, preserving, and providing access to digital and born-digital collections in accordance with archival standards, methodologies, and best practices in a museum, library, archive, cultural institution, or community archives context; and 2) assisted in writing policies and process for identifying and collecting web and social media content.


OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree if directly related to the work of the position. Related degrees may include library and information science, archival studies, archival science, media studies, sociology, anthropology, women’s studies, and history.

OR

A combination of related Ph.D. level education and specialized experience as described above.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  • Ability to establish and maintain continuing consultative relationships with multiple types of professional contacts.
  • Knowledge of web archiving tools (such as ArchiveIt, Heritrix, Social Feed Manager and other tools), and best practices for using them to ensure the long-term stewardship of born-digital collections.
  • Knowledge of archival methods and procedures to appraise, arrange and describe web-based records and media.
  • Knowledge of professional best practices and laws relating to intellectual property, privacy, and ethics to develop collecting policies and procedures for web and social media content.
  • Knowledge of contemporary women’s issues and historical framing sufficient to evaluate digital records, through knowledge of or demonstrated experience with topics in American history, women’s studies, gender studies, critical media studies and/or related scholarly disciplines.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.
