Job Description

At the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, we pride ourselves on providing a comprehensive education that produces outstanding physicians and healthcare professionals. We are seeking an Associate Dean for Student Affairs & Admissions that will provide leadership, strategy, and management of the MD Program’s Offices of Student Affairs and Admissions for both the Winston-Salem and Charlotte campuses, supporting MD program candidates and matriculants through the admissions process and from matriculation through graduation.

  • MD, PhD, or MD/PhD from an accredited college or university
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience in undergraduate medical education at the level of an assistant/associate dean, course director, clerkship director, learning community director, or academic advisor for medical students
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations pertaining to management of student records and the maintenance of student rights, privacy, and safety (e.g., FERPA, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, and the Campus Safety & Security Act)
  • Strong leadership experience, organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple work demands.
  • Demonstrated success in collaboration and a strong work ethic.

An ideal candidate will have decanal experience in a medical school, broad administrative and supervisory experience, experience supervising and mentoring diverse staff and students, experience with, and sensitivity to, diverse populations and the ability to build inclusive and equitable communities, demonstrated ability to oversee multiple and varied projects simultaneously, openness to feedback and a commitment to personal and professional growth, effective conflict management skills, an in-depth understanding and knowledge of accreditation of undergraduate medical programs, particularly the requirements and expectations of LCME, and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the school of medicine and across the university.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set the overall tone for the student culture and climate, maintaining and further optimizing a welcoming environment for MD Program students to learn, grow, and develop
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in all endeavors related to student affairs and admissions and pipeline/pathway programs, ensuring programs and initiatives are grounded in best practices
  • Ensure the admissions process matriculates a highly qualified and diverse student body
  • Interface with School of Medicine leadership to partner in pathway and pipeline programs
  • Participate in regional and national organizations which focus on pathway/pipeline programs, admissions, and student affairs for MD program matters (AAMC, etc.)
  • Work closely with the Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Oversee student disability accommodations and testing
  • Track and report data to monitor and maintain student satisfaction with the Offices of Student Affairs and Admissions and their resources, collecting student feedback and advocating for relevant change
  • Serve as an advocate to address student concerns, as well as represent student interests as an ex officio member of the Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, and other appropriate groups
  • Serve as a student advocate within the Wake Forest school of medicine and beyond
  • Ensure mistreatment awareness, reporting, and mitigation
  • Ensure medical student needs regarding advice on specialty choice, academic or personal issues, and leaves of absence are met
  • Partner with the Office of Student Success to ensure programs and services to foster holistic wellness-based initiatives that help students develop and sustain physical, mental, and spiritual well-being are available
  • Oversee student disciplinary action policies and processes in a fair, judicious, and impartial manner
  • Ensure policies related to Student Affairs, SAP, SPARC, etc. are up to date and included in the student handbook
  • Oversee the Learning Communities program
  • Oversee AOA, Gold Humanism, and MD program specific extracurricular certification and distinction offerings
  • Ensure the school is in compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards regarding medical student affairs and admissions
  • Lead a team of highly autonomous professionals focused on fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that enhances the student experience, mentoring and supporting the career development of direct reports
  • Work closely with academic and operational leaders throughout the institution to promote overall student success at all stages of a student’s medical education
  • Serve as a member of the Dean’s Cabinet and on other key committees, as needed
  • Integrate the programs and objectives of the Office of Student Affairs through open communications with deans’ team members in faculty affairs, academic affairs, and institutional culture & inclusivity
