About DVS
The mission of the Department of Veterans’ Services is to connect, mobilize, and empower New York City’s Veteran Community to foster purpose-driven lives for New York City Service Members – past and present – in addition to their caregivers, survivors, and families. DVS fulfills this mission by providing New York City’s approximately 200,000 Veterans with essential services and programs focused on pivotal areas such as economic empowerment, housing security, benefits, health and wellness, and culture.

The Community Services Unit is responsible for the agency’s benefits and support services, this includes ongoing resource development, policy and programmatic improvements and continuous coordination with city, state, federal and private sector partners that provide resources to veterans.

About the Role
The Community Services Unit works to close gaps and empower New York City Veterans’ and their families through the proper connection to resources and support offered through our VetConnectNYC program. The Manager of Claims will be expected to manage claims processes including intake, preparation and filing of claims for a broad spectrum of federal, state, local, and private Veterans’ benefits, such as for Disability Compensation, Non-service Connected Pension, and other benefits.

The Manager of Claims will be responsible for managing Veterans Benefits Specialists who support all Claims activities including performing intake, gathering appropriate documentation, preparing and filing claims.

Manager of Claims will:

  • Assess veteran’s unmet needs, identify point of contacts with trusted service providers, determine eligibility criteria for programs and services, and/or assist veterans to navigate resources
through VetConnectNYC;

  • Manage and perform Claims activities in the areas of research, evaluation, policy advocacy, analysis, and supervision of Veterans Benefits Specialists;

  • Support Community Services Unit by helping to maintain key relationships in the greater New York City area, New York State Department of Veterans’ Services, VA;

  • On occasion, be asked to attend Veteran Advisory Board meetings, relevant civic and community boards/meetings, precincts, veteran service organizations, and represent DVS at community
and ceremonial events;

  • Actively create of a culture of inclusion and collaboration within the agency, ensuring their vision and priorities align with the Community Services team.

  • Collaborate and partner with veteran service organizations, communities, other city agencies, and government and non-government partners to address needs related to disability and pension
claims, mental health, employment, legal, housing, benefits and more.

  • Assist in collection of data for reporting requirements for all metrics relating to Claims activities

  • Selected candidate must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends and travel extensively throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC;

  • Operational knowledge of New York City government or willingness to learn;

  • Ability to work comfortably with diverse populations, with sensitivity to issues concerning health, homelessness, gender or sexual identity, and mental well-being;

  • Superb written and verbal communication skills;

  • Comfortable speaking in public and in front of groups;

  • Proficient computer skills with software including MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and database data-entry;

  • Veteran or Veteran spouse status a plus.
