Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Communications and Marketing Manager, Science is US.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Science is US and working collaboratively with the Public Affairs Director and Field Director, the Communications and Marketing Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communication and marketing strategy—with a particular emphasis on digital and social—to support and build the Science is US network and presence in key states and localities.

Science is US brings together eight science, engineering, higher education, and industry organizations to build political champions for science. It does this by telling an inclusive story of what science is and who does science—one that includes STEM professionals ranging from PhD scientists to those without a bachelor’s degree. And it works to tell that story through partnership with allied organizations at the state and local levels.

The successful candidate will manage day-to-day social, generate new ideas for expanding the Science is US message and activities across digital platforms and lead the overall management of the initiative’s identity on digital platforms (including website).

What You’ll Do

  • Develop a communication and marketing strategy to support the goals of Science is US—namely to help build a network of allies dedicated to bridging the gap between the science and engineering communities and policy makers.
  • Develop and execute social media campaigns to grow and support the initiative’s brand and help increase awareness of the impact of science on society and everyday lives.
  • Provide overall management and coordination for the Science is US digital and social media properties, including the website and Twitter, Facebook and Instagram - and launch additional platforms as appropriate.
  • Maintain social media calendar and draft written copy and graphic elements. Monitor online engagement, use social network data to track and capture metrics and analytics.
  • Coordinate with partners in key states on marketing messaging around joint initiatives and local events.
  • Produce communications and marketing materials including writing copy and performing basic design functions.
  • Serve as a key thinking partner to your Science is US colleagues on developing new tools, messages, and campaigns to connect with target audiences.
  • Manage email marketing platform, writing copy, producing messages and tracking results.
  • Assist in the drafting and dissemination of press materials including news releases, media advisories and opinion pieces.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, digital media, or related field
  • 7 – 10 years relevant experience in communications, digital media and/or marketing
  • A solid social media storyteller with experience crafting messages for diverse audiences
  • Experience in developing social media campaigns and producing content including graphical elements
  • Graphic design skills with experience using leading programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite and Canva
  • Solid project management, analytical, creative, and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to adapt and take on projects as necessary

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $95,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
