Organizational Overview

El Paso Matters was formed as a Texas non-profit corporation in 2019 to provide a source of in-depth and investigative journalism for El Paso and the border region. We began publishing in 2020. El Paso Matter is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. El Paso Matters mission is to use journalism to expand civic capacity in our region. We inform and engage with people in El Paso, Ciudad Juarez and neighboring communities to create solutions-driven conversations about complex issues shaping our region.

Job Function

The Controller will have the responsibility for the accounting, accounting processes, cash management and internal control functions of El Paso Matters and assist the CEO and other El Paso Matters leaders in develop strategy and tactics to advance our mission. The Controller will also be responsible for Human Resources and other administrative functions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and provides monthly consolidated financial statements for El Paso Matters along with all supporting documentation to the CEO for review.
  • Works with CEO to develop and execute financial management policies, and work toward separation of El Paso Matters from its fiscal sponsor.
  • Maintains accounting records by Funding Sources and Grants (as appropriate) for additional reporting for annual financial statements, Grantors, taxing authorities and any other reporting as required.
  • Works with CEO or other grant “owners” to understand the grant requirements and properly report grant accounting records as required.
  • Manages the donation revenue process, including tracking donations. Manages the multiple year donation invoicing and collections process.
  • Maintains stakeholder confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge competency (including knowledge of non-profit accounting, U.S. GAAP and IRS regulations) by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.

  • Participates in the annual Audit and Form 990 tax preparation process.
  • Compiles input from departments and prepares all detail and summary budget reports for CEO review and Board of Director approval.
  • Assists CEO with Treasury management.
  • Maintains financial security and safeguarding of assets by designing and following internal controls.
  • Manages certain human resources related functions required for new, existing and former employees, such as collecting and maintaining El Paso Matters, DOL and IRS required forms (e.g., I-9), adding new employees to payroll and direct deposit, managing payroll and paid time off, etc.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS Degree in Business, Accounting.
  • Strong financial skills. CPA desirable, but not required.
  • Experience coordinating several projects at once and working in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in computer skills including MS Office, QuickBooks (or equivalent accounting system).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willing to be accountable for producing results and getting the job done with no loose ends.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is desirable, but not required.
  • Inspired by a mission focus on El Paso.

Salary and Benefits: Salary based on experience. Fringe benefits of paid time off and health insurance, with partial monthly employer premium contribution employer, 401(k) with employer match.
