JOB TITLE: Accounting Director

Summer Discovery and Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) change students’ lives. We offer pre-college academic, enrichment, and gifted programs for students aged 6 – 17.  We partner with world-class universities including UCLA, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, Wharton, and Cambridge to run programs where students learn, have fun, and thrive. What’s the job?

We’re looking for an experienced Accounting Director to lead all aspects of accounting and daily financial operations in our highly seasonal, high volume, high growth business. The perfect candidate will be comfortable being an active individual contributor while also leading a lean team.

A core responsibility will be designing, managing and executing accounting and financial processes to help scale the business while also performing month-end close, including the preparation and posting of journals.

This person will have strong organizational skills to ensure the company’s consolidated financial statements are prepared timely and accurately. They will have the ability to work independently in a very fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while efficiently and effectively managing competing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all financial transactions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, procurement, travel and expenses, payroll, and other general ledger adjustments.
  • Manage all technical accounting, including revenue deferral/recognition, expense accruals, asset depreciation/amortization, managerial reserves/estimates, lease/debt amortization, intercompany, and equity.
  • Manage and support preparations for high volume, seasonal summer operations (staff expense management, billable expenses, partner reconciliations).
  • Understand high volume, seasonal staff onboarding and employment verification.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, maintain current audit schedules, and provide a variety of variance and metric reporting.
  • Provide timely and complete monthly, quarterly, and annual internal management reporting and financial statements.
  • Lead annual audit.
  • Analyze workflow for efficiency, best practices, and improvements.
  • Prepare and maintain books and records for campus reporting and profitability.
  • Prepare and provide external reporting to management, board of directors, private equity owners, auditors, lenders, and tax professionals.
  • Review and approve invoices for payment.
  • NetSuite administration
  • Develop, supervise and train accounting staff.
  • Ad hoc projects as requested.

Qualifications

  • CPA or equivalent preferred.
  • 5-10 years financial operations experience managing people and a financial department independently.
  • Strong experience with month-end and year-end close processes including overseeing annual audit.
  • Expertise in NetSuite (or similar ERP) software system
  • Corporate credit card, merchant services & credit card processing experience preferred.
  • Dedicated to timely and accurate reporting.
  • Strong business acumen, natural curiosity, and a growth mindset.
  • Professional communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills to work effectively at all levels and across concurrent projects and workstreams.
  • Highly proficient in Excel
  • Salesforce.com experience is preferred.
  • This position is hybrid but living in the New York Metropolitan area is required as there will be two days per week required in our Roslyn, New York office beginning in September.

Compensation: $100,000-140,000
