The Team

As the Technical Accounting and Financial Reporting Director, you are a highly skilled and experienced accounting professional who is excited to lead a critically important function for a young public company. You are the owner of the Company’s accounting policies and a key partner for our product development, capital markets, and legal teams on a variety of projects and initiatives requiring technical accounting and financial reporting analysis. You have deep and broad knowledge of US GAAP and are an expert in several topics, including stock-based compensation, revenue, derivatives, and consolidations.

You own Upstart’s SEC reporting calendar and lead preparation and completion of our SEC filings. As part of this work, you closely coordinate with multiple internal stakeholders, including the executive team. You lead the work with the Company's Disclosure Committee and periodically present at the Audit Committee meetings.

You are part of the CFO organization and report to the VP-Finance and Corporate Controller.

Position Location - T his role is available in the following locations: San Mateo, CA.

Time Zone Requirements - this team operates on the West Coast time zone.

Travel Requirements - This is a hybrid role. The team meets in person in the office a couple of times a week and works remotely the rest of the time.

How you’ll make an impact:

Build a strong team of technical accounting and SEC reporting professionals.
Oversee and direct technical accounting research and analysis on a variety of complex accounting topics. Lead communications with independent auditors, including those related to National Office consultations.
Manage all stages of preparation and completion of SEC filings (10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks). Be a key stakeholder in decisions related to financial and non-financial disclosures. Analyze and address comments from internal and external stakeholders, including the Disclosure Committee, the Audit Committee, and the auditors.
Work closely with the accounting operations/GL team on operationalizing technical accounting decisions and conclusions.
Own several processes and internal controls over financial reporting.
Monitor changes and lead implementation of new accounting pronouncements. Explain upcoming changes and their impact to various internal stakeholders.
Contribute to preparation of materials for the Audit Committee meetings.
Drive planning and adoption of new tools to enable efficiency and accuracy.
Manage relationships with key service providers, including independent auditors.

What we’re looking for:

Minimum qualifications:

Active CPA license and thorough technical accounting knowledge of US GAAP (especially ASC 718, 606, 810, 815, and 860) and SEC reporting standards
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
10+ years of relevant experience, including technical accounting, public accounting experience and industry experience in public companies

Preferred qualifications:

Proven record of building and leading effective professional teams
Excitement to lead both technical accounting and SEC reporting functions
Experience in designing and maintaining internal controls over financial reporting
Proficiency with technical accounting research tools and SEC reporting tools (Workiva, Intelligize)
Superior oral and written communication skills
Strong continuous improvement mindset

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within this range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. The salary listed below for sales roles is On Target Earnings which includes both salary and commission, assuming 100% target achievement.
