Job Summary
Responsible for providing support and counsel to managers and employees on escalated and complex employee relations issues, including assisting with policy interpretation, the performance improvement process and related plans, investigations, terminations, as well as with employee and manager counseling related to employee relations issues; working regularly with senior staff to develop a culture of continuous improvement, employee engagement, and fairness; collaborating with other members of the Human Resources leadership team across functional areas to design and implement programs of value to the organization; supporting the Director of Employee Relations in general administration regarding employee relations matters, developing and implementing policies, and providing ongoing support regarding trends and subsequent interventions and improvements. Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelors Degree in Human Resources, Business or related field

Licenses/Certification: SPHR, PHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP preferred

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
  • Five (5) years progressive human resources experience focusing on employee relations
  • Broad mastery of human resources management, especially employee relations, in a large, complex organizational structure
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable state and federal employment and labor laws and government compliance requirements
  • Commitment to and expert skill in collaboration, problem solving, negotiation, and mediation; ability to maintain objectivity, establish credibility, and maintain relationships with business managers
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Principal Accountabilities
  • Conducts investigations of employees for escalated and complex employee relations matters, writes reports regarding the investigations, and makes recommendations for corrective action recommendations; as needed, conducts confidential and sensitive investigations, possibly in partnership with Security, Privacy, Corporate Compliance and Risk Management.
  • Coordinates and executes the position elimination process, ensuring any eliminations are implemented and administered in accordance with System policies and guidelines.
  • Investigates and reviews worker classification requests and determinations, with support from Legal Counsel.
  • Provides guidance to management and employees on performance, conflict resolution, position elimination, HR policies and procedures, employment/labor laws, EEO, and terminations to promote a fair and equitable work environment.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation of corrective actions and investigations.
  • Participates in employee relations programs, including, but not limited to, EEO, performance management, retention, and termination.
  • Proactively aggregates and analyzes employee relations metrics and trends from multiple HR systems and resources; facilitates data quality; interprets information in a clear, concise, and business-relevant manner; identifies and monitors gaps/opportunities for improvement and consults with HR Business Partners and Legal Counsel to develop related comprehensive plans/programming to mitigate risks to the business (e.g. analysis of litigation, claims, and unemployment compensation).
  • Develops and provides appropriate training to managers and supervisor in response to trends, including training on the performance improvement process, supervisory skills, providing feedback, terminations, legal updates, policies and practices.
  • Assists Legal Counsel in responding to governmental claims (e.g. EEOC, DOL).
  • Analyzes requests for accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Assists in internal audits of employee relations issues, and makes recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
  • Researches best practices; develops and implements Employee Relations related policies in coordination with Legal Counsel.
  • Assists Director of Employee Relations in selecting vendors and technology related to the delivery of Employee Relations related services.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
