The Beaverton Police Department is accepting applications for entry level Police Officers. Police officers require the ability to learn a considerable amount of factual material such as laws, statutes, regulations, ordinances and procedures, understand sometimes complex oral and written instructions, act effectively and calmly in emergency situations, operate assigned equipment skillfully and safely, prepare clear, concise yet comprehensive reports, analyze situations quickly and objectively, work effectively with the public, other agencies and other employees.

The Selection Process:

This recruitment is open continuously and applications will be reviewed regularly. Qualified applicants will be invited for a written exam and physical agility test. Oral boards will be scheduled for eligible applicants who pass both tests. Final applicants will be required to pass a rigorous background examination, and any job offer will be contingent upon passing a medical exam, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.

Responsibilities

Perform duties in the Officer classification and other related duties as assigned including but not limited to:
  • Enforce criminal and traffic laws
  • Make arrests
  • Issue citations
  • Investigate accidents
  • Patrol roads, highways and businesses
  • Write reports
  • Appear in court
  • Handle prisoners
  • Communicate by radio
  • Educate public
  • Provide services to citizens
  • Contribute to the promotion of organizational values, including personal and professional development; diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; actively promote the value of respect in a multicultural society

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 90 college credit hours and/or work skills and life experience that are relevant to a law enforcement career.
  • 21 years of age or older by the time of hire.
  • A US citizen within 18 months of hire or a non-immigrant legally admitted to the United States under a Compact of Free Association.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards .
  • May never have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that reflects adversely on the capacity to serve as a police officer.
  • Able to pass written exam, physical agility test and run a mile under nine minutes.
  • Abie to pass background and reference check, drug screen, medical and psychological evaluation.
  • Abie to obtain Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) within 18 months of date of hire.
  • Able to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays.

Compensation

Wage rate: $34.09 hourly

All new hires with no sworn, paid law enforcement (police) work experience will start at step 1 of the posted salary range.
