Position Summary:

This position will assist in maintaining the kitchens and laboratories in the Culinary areas and support lab activities in the Hospitality Programs. Its responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Clean kitchens and work areas, as well as equipment.
  • Fill requisitions for food and equipment requested by instructors.
  • Cook and chill standardized recipes utilizing good sanitation practices.
  • Receive and store food and supplies in assigned warehousing and/or cold storage areas.
  • Operate various types of powered kitchen equipment according to established health and safety procedures.
  • Operate laundry equipment - press and fold linens.
  • Supervise part-time kitchen workers.
  • Return leftover products to inventory. Control inventory.
  • Assist with department catering functions.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Safely operate standard kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Must be able to identify and properly handle herbs and other foodstuffs.
  • Maintain equipment as directed
  • Fill requisitions made by instructors on a timely basis; ensure food products are wholesome.
  • Practice of health and sanitation as it pertains to the food service industry.
  • Provide work direction to part-time workers.
  • Able to work on feet 90%-95% per shift
  • Able to work with potential allergens including, but not limited to: latex, nuts, fish/shellfish, eggs, milk, wheat and cleaning chemicals
  • Able to distinguish between odors, and shades of color
  • Functionally communicate occupational-based English, both written and verbal
  • Must maintain personal hygiene
  • Must be coachable
  • Worker must obtain at own expense, and keep updated, a SNHD Food Handler Safety Training Card.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry materials weighing up to 60 pounds and, occasionally, with assistance, heavier items.

The work environment potential conditions include:
  • Primarily indoor and some outdoor.
  • Extreme hot and cold temperatures, including humidity.
  • Slippery surfaces.
  • Exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes and/or gases.
  • Exposure to possible food allergens.

OTHER ASSOCIATED FACTORS:

Position requires reliable and consistent attendance

Work may require standing, stooping, bending, climbing, crawling, and kneeling for extended periods

Must be able to work with others

Assist kitchen manager with other related duties as necessary for operations.

Required Qualifications

One year of experience in quantity food preparation and service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above

Preferred Qualifications
  • Must maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Must be punctual, courteous, and productive.
  • Willing and able to work with a team
  • One year minimum of accredited, post-secondary culinary school, or two years cooking in a fine dining establishment

Scheduled Weekly Hours
  • Mon- Wed 1:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Sat - Sun 6:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Hours of operation vary between 6 am to 11 pm, 7 days a week and depending on the school year. Must be available to work days, nights and weekends

Starting Salary

Grade 20 , Step 1 $ 28,856.16

Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
