Position Highlights

The IT Accessibility Consultant (IT Business Relationship Professional III) works to ensure that all UA technology-based tools and resources are accessible to and usable by any individual who participates in University programs, services and activities. To achieve the goal of an accessible IT environment, the IT Accessibility Consultant: collaborates across campus to resolve technological access barriers in the curricular, information and employment environments; conducts system and user need analysis and plans, designs, analyzes, tests and implements accessibility solutions; consults on the development and implementation of accessible websites, enterprise level systems, online instruction platforms, campus-related applications, and other information technology; actively oversees, develops, coordinates, and implements training opportunities for campus entities to advance these goals for an accessible IT environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Actively analyzes and provides technical guidance regarding the accessibility of enterprise level systems, campus-related applications, and University websites for users with disabilities.

  • Guides the development, promotion, and support of accessibility guidelines, standards, processes, trainings, techniques, and resources to ensure and enhance campus-wide accessibility of applications and websites.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in conversations with University staff and campus-related vendors for these technologies.
  • Collaborates in coordinating ongoing accessibility research and audits; evaluating results and provides input regarding emerging and/or relevant methodologies and design techniques as they relate to software and application accessibility.
  • Provides reports and resolutions, based on analysis for accessibility, and oversees implementation of solutions. Creates tracking systems as needed to gather the data for this goal.
  • Manages the University’s web accessibility assessment and scanning tool.
  • Participates in procurement processes and application pilot opportunities to evaluate new software before campus-wide purchase and/or implementation; confers with vendors, buyers and department representatives; identifies accommodation solutions if access problems are identified in selected products.

Works strategically to incorporate and increase awareness about universal access and inclusive design across campus technology environments. To accomplish this ongoing goal, active participation in University committees is necessary.

Supports Disability Infrastructure and Analytics

  • Responds to user-reported accessibility issues. Works with users and developers, if necessary, to determine a solution in a timely manner and documents solution.
  • Partners with Disability Resource Center Access Consultants in solving individual student and employee information and technology access problems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of, and ability to research, analyze and apply, accessibility standards and guidelines (examples include WAI, WCAG 2.1, Section 508, ARIA); accessibility auditing and testing tools and strategies including but not limited to VPAT and WCAG 2.1 validation toolsets.
  • Knowledge of web code languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, ARIA, and knowledge of web content management systems.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to work with, assistive technologies hardware and software on multiple platforms including Windows, Mac, iOS and Android; knowledge of designing and testing methodologies on each platform.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, methods and techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and solutions verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical individuals.
  • Strong understanding of IT accessibility as it relates to the higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting languages, analyzing and responding to user requests; writing technical and functional documentation; conducting applications technology research and implementing appropriate testing and documentation protocols.
  • Knowledge of applications programming theory, principles and practices; software development life cycle; current and emerging application programming and scripting languages; current and emerging technology, service protocols and standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience in the field of IT accessibility.
  • Experience with assistive technologies used to access digital content.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite of Applications, Google Suite, and other technologies generally used in a higher education environment.
