Overview:

The Laboratory Modernization Division (LMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mechanical Engineer. This position will primarily support Laboratory Modernization Division work on capital improvements and renovations but will also provide analysis and design support to multiple other facilities and small projects around the ORNL campus.


ORNL is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The lab’s diverse capabilities span a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.


In this role you will provide mechanical engineering support with a focus on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, and piping systems. Work varies from providing oversight and technical review of large projects to self-performing design and commissioning activities for smaller projects.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review of engineering drawings and technical specifications to ensure compliance to design requirements and industry standards
  • Meet with on-site customers to define technical requirements
  • Develop mechanical deliverables for small design tasks such as system modifications or additions – produce supporting sketches, drawings, specifications, and/or calculations
  • Develop scopes of work based upon conceptual design guidance
  • Develop conceptual design packages and associated cost estimates
  • Develop design concepts for cost estimating by others
  • Review technical studies – evaluate proposed technical options/alternatives, devise methods of accomplishment to support the budget, and assist in implementing selected solutions
  • Perform construction oversight and review construction submittals Perform troubleshooting of HVAC and piping systems
  • Conduct independent reviews
  • Attend project meetings – follow project progress, interface with customer and project teams, and keep stakeholders informed.

Basic qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • A minimum of eight years’ experience in HVAC and piping design required
  • Must be familiar with key HVAC industry standards, such as ASHRAE, NFPA, and ASME B31.3
  • Engineer Intern certification with the ability to gain a Professional Engineering license in the state of Tennessee.


Preferred qualifications/experience:

  • Commissioning experience preferred
  • CAD experience beneficial (ORNL primarily uses Microstation, but AutoCAD exertise is acceptable).
