Overview

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Manufacturing Operations Lead for the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position will reside in IPMD’s Operations Support Group and is focused on processes responsible for the reliable delivery of radioisotope products to support our world class radioisotope production program. This work supports the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production. Work is performed in gloveboxes/shielded hot cells within several unique radiological and nuclear facilities throughout the ORNL campus.The Manufacturing Operations Lead position supports day-to-day operations by proactively managing activities that ensure compliant and reliable manufacturing operations. This position reports to IPMD’s Operations Support Group Leader and has accountability to the Division Director for conduct of operations, nuclear safety, and transition of new production processes to operations to enable safe and secure production operations.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as IPMD’s lead for conduct of operations, nuclear safety, and transition of new production processes to operations to enable safe and secure production environment
  • Assist line management in developing and maintaining processes to achieve world class conduct of operations within IPMD.
  • Identify areas where ConOps program effectiveness or efficiency can be enhanced and work with cross-functional teams to bring about improvement to processes.
  • Serve as the system owner for the tools used for ConOps monitoring and issue resolution.
  • Monitor day-to-day activities to ensure execution meets expectations.
  • Assist line management in developing and maintaining processes to achieve world class nuclear safety program within IPMD.
  • Coordinate with ISED divisions and Production staff to ensure the flawless transition of new production processes/equipment to IPMD.
  • Develop a consolidated long-range plan and assessment strategy for conduct of operations and new process transition over a five-year planning horizon.
  • Assist the Operations Support Group Leader with other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in technical, business, or related field, with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.
  • Strong understanding of DOE O 422.1, Conduct of Operations.
  • A background of working within large organizations or complex projects that require planning, communications, reporting, and assessment, with demonstrated capabilities in each of these areas is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem identification/resolution skills are required, along with a proven ability to work with both internal and external partners. Quality focused and detail-oriented.
  • An understanding of manufacturing, quality, and maintenance processes.
  • Ability to work and communicate (written and oral) effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal oversight
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Teams)
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE security clearance is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in business or engineering.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in a DOE production facility.
  • Proven ability to function well in a Production environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Experience with DOE safety, security, and regulatory requirements
  • Active DOE Q clearance


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
