Job Summary:
Creates written material, takes photos and videos, and manages social media platforms for Cherokee Nation. Adherence to strict deadlines, works with media and speaks knowledgeably on behalf of Cherokee Nation.
Job Duties:
Writes and edits public relations copy for Cherokee Nation, including but not limited to media alerts, press releases, feature and magazine stories, intranet content, speeches, presentations and social media posts. Takes photos and video from both professional grade cameras and handheld devices. Creates PR content for multiple platforms including, but not limited to, video, print, web and social media. Adheres to deadlines, coordinates interviews with media and may speak on behalf of Cherokee Nation, with advance approval from Deputy Director or Director of Communications. Helps plan and execute public events from building agenda, writing talking points, setting up venue, pitching media. Works with department heads to find positive stories about the Cherokee Nation and its programs and citizens. Assists the department as needed in other areas of public relations, including but not limited to updating websites, working with outside vendors such as printers, etc. Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibility. Manages multiple projects without having direct supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Bachelor's degree from 4-year college or university in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising or related field; no substitutions..
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
College portfolio, internship, or 6 months professional experience.
COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Adobe suite skills preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. May be required to travel periodically to meetings and/or activities for the Cherokee Nation and other entities.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of social media skills and tactics. Strong writing and public speaking skills. Knowledge of AP Style a must. Smartphone photo and video editing skills preferred.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
Working knowledge of newsroom environment preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is primarily in an office environment. However, in the event of covering news events for Cherokee Nation, employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
