Job Description

Overview

At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Responsibilities

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a qualified postdoctoral research associate to join the Actinide Chemistry Team, which supports the goals of the Nuclear Sciences Division. The ideal candidate will support a mass spectrometry capability in the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory that consists of a Triton Plus TIMS, a Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS, and an Element XR ICP-MS. Significant, hands-on experience with at least one of these analytical instruments is required. Experience with laser ablation would be an asset. The candidate should also have significant experience with acid digestion of solids and chromatographic separations (ion exchange and/or sorption) as well as experience working in a trace isotopic/elemental signatures laboratory. Knowledge of radiochronometry is preferred. This candidate will support research related to nuclear forensics, nuclear fuel fabrication, and post irradiation examinations. The candidate will be expected to work with a team of researchers, contribute to future proposals for research funding, and adhere to a culture of safety.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in geology, chemistry, radiochemistry, or nuclear engineering with 2+ years of experience with thermal ionization mass spectrometry and/or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
  • The candidate must have experience with TIMS, MC-ICP-MS, and/or HR-ICP-MS.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with ion exchange chromatography.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience working in a clean room.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team member.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
