Occupational Summary

The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing innovative communications to support strategic initiatives in the Duke Department of Neurosurgery. This position will plan and create content for websites, publications, and other internal and external communication channels. Approximately 50% of time will be devoted to the initiatives of the Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis (DCBSM). The position will be supervised by the director of communications and marketing in the Department of Neurosurgery and will have regular interaction with members of the DCBSM as well as the Duke Cancer Institute.

Work Performed

Work with the NSU and DCBSM teams to plan and develop communications to support initiatives including events, philanthropic initiatives, and outreach campaigns.

Write blog posts regarding patient care and research. Write announcements and newsletter articles regarding faculty and staff achievements.

Create content for websites, social media, publications, and other communication channels to ensure consistency of style and freshness and usability in support of strategic goals. Content may include video and audio content, social media posts, electronic newsletters, emails, articles, flyers, and posters.

Update the websites of the Department of Neurosurgery and the DCBSM.

Work with members of the DCBSM for the creation of newsletters, social media, and internal communications.

Create invitations, posters, banners, signs, etc., to support events for both internal and external audiences. Assist during events as necessary.

Required Qualifications

Education/Training: Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in a related field (journalism, English, communications).

Experience: Work generally requires one to three year(s) of experience in writing, communications, advertising, marketing, or related field.

Skills: Work requires excellent written and oral communications skills, good organizational skills, enthusiasm for digital content creation, familiarity with a variety of social media platforms, familiarity with basic web editing, and basic video editing skills. Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite and at least one design program such as Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Express, Premiere Pro, or iMovie. Familiarity with Drupal a plus.


Minimum Qualifications


Education

Work requires communication and marketing skills normally acquired through a bachelor's degree in a related field.


Experience


Work generally requires one year related experience in advertising, EXPERIENCE OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR marketing, media, promotions or public relations.
