The Opportunity:
This is an entry-level laboratory safety position that routinely inspects science laboratories to ensure UCF safety policies and procedures are followed. Performs compliance inspections related to laboratory safety, including laboratory conditions, chemical storage, chemical inventory, hazardous material storage, and lab worker training documentation. Prepares inspection reports and maintains inspection documentation digitally. Requires experience using web-based applications, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Calendars, and Outlook. Conducts follow-up inspections, advises lab personnel regarding safety standards, monitors completion dates of corrective action plans, and provides follow-up with departments and supervisors to ensure corrective actions are implemented. Works independently, but also needs the ability to collaborate with team members on a regular basis. Must be willing to learn during on-the-job training.

1. Investigation and Prevention
  • Conducts laboratory inspections for safety compliance.
  • Creates reports using web based applications.
  • Monitors chemical inventories.
  • Documents and maintains digital records of inspections.
  • Collaborates with lab personnel to address concerns.
  • Conducts follow-up inspections to assess compliance.
  • Become familiar with regulation interpretations and applications.
2. Communication
  • Be able to explain safety regulations to lab personnel.
  • Communicate inspection findings in a professional manner.
  • Ability to clearly communicate findings in writing.
  • Ensures effective communication of university policies and safety standards.
  • Promotes safe practices and enforces guidelines set forth by the university.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work with others.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Driver's License, Class E
  • Ability to conduct audits and investigations
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • Ability to adhere to ethical business practices and promote ethical behavior
  • Experience identifying safety hazards in a laboratory
  • Knowledge of emergency communications and hazard response practices, procedures, and protocols
