What is the role?

Michaels Energy is seeking an energy engineer with retro-commissioning experience and excellent communication skills in the Indianapolis, IN area. This program entails identifying and recruiting customers that are interested in optimizing their controls system for energy savings. This role will work hand in hand with local controls vendors to recommend and verify the proper implementation of energy savings control sequences. Client and customer communication is critical in this role. Types of communication include emails, phone calls, meetings, presentations, and non-technical and technical writing. This position will work along side dedicated account managers and customer support personnel, who will do most outreach and recruiting, and a product manager who will manage the client, timelines, and budgets. We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about energy efficiency and providing excellent customer support.


Data Collection

  • Develops data collection plans prior to customer visit
  • Gathers energy usage data while at customer site, which includes visual inspection, customer/operator interviews, building plans and documents, automation system trend data, photos, spot measurements and data logging
  • Verifies successful measure deployment upon project completion

Facility Control System Analysis

  • Communicates with clients, end-users, vendors, and trade allies to gather information required for project completion
  • Documents the project findings, including baseline conditions, energy savings recommendations, and other important details related to the project
  • Analyzes data and develops appropriate engineering models to accurately portray the equipment or system under study
  • Performs energy savings calculations using a pre-built template and occasionally, custom savings templates
  • Prepares technical report that describes the HVAC systems under consideration, their operating characteristics, deficiencies, and proposed modifications in an easy-to-read format

Project Recruitment and Screening

  • Develops relationships with local control vendors to drive existing projects forward and recruit new building owners
  • Uses basic knowledge of utility bills and building systems to identify buildings with efficiency potential
  • Trains controls contractors on efficiency program process

  • Learned company processes and procedures
  • Completed at least one customer site visit independently
  • Connected with area controls vendors

After 6 months, you have

  • A thorough understanding the efficiency program’s design and guidelines
  • Led customer meetings and project report outs
  • Completed at least five full energy studies for a customer facility

What are we looking for?

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in mechanical, chemical, or building systems engineering
  • Five years’ experience with a combination of engineering, HVAC controls, energy efficiency, energy auditing, customer/client interactions, and project management
  • In-depth HVAC systems understanding
  • Experience with varied brands of building automation systems
  • Thrives on meeting people, building relationships and customer satisfaction
  • Passion for energy conservation
  • Ability to travel regionally to up 30% for customer site visits and occasional travel to the corporate office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.)

Where can you work?

Must be located in Indiana. A preferred location is the Indianapolis area. You will have the option to work in the office, work from home or hybrid.
