Role and Responsibilities

SEMCOG (EOE) is seeking an experienced Accountant III to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Accountant III assists in overseeing the Finance department by performing integral accounting duties and grant management functions in both a general ledger and project accounting environment. This includes applying for grants, grant billing and reporting, overseeing grants and budgets, compliance, tracking and monitoring contracts and expenses, closing the general ledger, handling all interim and final reporting to the grantor agencies for two separate entities, closing the fiscal year, and managing the annual audits of each entity.

Allocates and reconciles pooled costs to direct projects. Prepares and files monthly, quarterly, semiannual, annual, and final financial and progress reporting to the grantor agencies. Manages the membership and designated management agency billing processes. Assists in the management of accounting functions for SEMCOG’s partner organization, the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition, including accounts payable/receivable, project accounting, and the general ledger. Manages financial audits, including reviewing and preparing documents and reconciliations. Provides documents to the auditors, fields audit requests, answers questions, and delegates audit duties to Finance staff where appropriate. Performs related work and assists with routine tasks as needed.

The successful candidate will have well-developed project accounting, organization, and time management skills, be detailed, self-motivated, capable of working on multiple tasks with competing deadlines, maintain confidentiality of employee and organization information, and work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of staff. Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of government, non-profit, or council of governments accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of basic Accounting and Bookkeeping principles and practices, payroll tax laws, federal grant requirements, and auditing standards. Strong quantitative skills and capacity to prepare, interpret, and analyze complex data.
  • Working knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment, including applicable software (Adobe, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
  • Effective written and verbal skills, and ability to understand and carry out verbal and written directions.
