Where You Will Work

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) provides independent oversight of NRO program and activities through audits, inspections, and investigations. We evaluate compliance with laws and regulations and recommend improvements to assist management in making decisions that foster integrity throughout the organization.

What You Will Be Doing

The NRO Office of Inspector General (OIG) requires a highly skilled Data Scientist to contribute to the OIG Data Analytics Division. This is an ever changing environment requiring the individual to be flexible and supportive of the continuous ongoing projects. The Data Analytics Division provides data analysis and visualization support to ongoing audits, inspections, and investigations.

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Integrate data analytics into key OIG processes to facilitate data-driven decisions.
  • Determine accountability and the degree to which NRO programs, operations, and services have incorporated appropriate IT and cybersecurity planning, design, and integration.
  • Apply data analytics knowledge to help determine whether the associated national policies and Intelligence Community (IC) standards are effectively employed.
  • Conduct data quality reviews, perform data modeling and descriptive analytics, and create advanced visualizations to enrich products and enhance the NRO mission.
  • Apply analytical rigor while driving actionable insights and practical recommendations.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of using various data sets to enhance audits, investigations, and inspections.
  • Identify, obtain, evaluate, and combine various data sources, to improve how the office describes the magnitude and impact of findings in audits, inspections, and investigations.
  • Ensure appropriate reliable data is collected, protected, and stored to support oversight efforts.
  • Improve how the office collects, analyzes, and manages data that may or may not be readily available.
  • Build data models, tools, and appropriate data visualizations and/or dashboards to tell the data story and clearly articulate results to key decision makers.
  • Communicate various forms of data through analysis at all levels.

What You Need

  • Desired: Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science or other related field.
  • Desired: Advanced degree in a data science equivalent field or sub-field.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: data analytics, business intelligence, operations research, computer programming, data engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in descriptive data modeling and advanced visualization creating using software such as EXCEL, Tableau, Python, or R.
  • Experience with relational databases such as SQL.
  • Experience with unstructured and semi-structured data sources.
  • Experience with Data Governance.

This position has a positive educational requirement and requires a Degree in Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be a major field of study (at least the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. Combination of education and experience may be used. Incumbents must demonstrate courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as outlined above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

Qualifying experience may have been acquired in any public or private sector job, but will clearly demonstrate past experience in the application of the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform and is typically in or directly related to the duties of the position as described above. Experience must be reflected in your resume.

  • Overtime Statement: May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Travel Statement: May be required to travel in military or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments.

2023 Salary range for Washington DC Area:

GG-11: $78,592 - $102,166

GG 12: $94,199 – $122,459

GG-13 $112,015 - $145,617

**This position is a full performance level DCIPS position. The NRO is accepting applications from U.S. Citizens and current Federal Government employees for this position. To qualify for the position, Federal government employees MUST currently be at the GG 11-13 grade level and may ONLY apply for a lateral reassignment at their current grade level and step. Hiring Incentives

The NRO may offer hiring incentives and other entitlements at management’s discretion.

Trial Period

All new DCIPS employees will be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
