POSITION: EL Coordinator/Teacher

JOB TITLE: A-ELL Coord(S), JOB CODE: INST1045

LOCATION: Great Hearts Harveston, REPORTS TO: Head of School, EEO Classification: Professionals, FLSA STATUS Salaried-Exempt

JOB DESCRIPTION

The EL Coordinator/Teacher fulfills two essential roles in support of English Learners at Great Hearts Harveston:

Leading and Coordinating the EL program at Great Hearts Harveston

Providing language acquisition instruction to students who are English Learners such that they attain academic proficiency in English and can engage the Great Hearts curriculum and classical, liberal arts experience.

Responsibilities:

Coordinating: The EL Coordinator facilitates the identification and assessment of EL students, develops English Language Instructional Support Plans to support EL student language acquisition, and collaborates with and supports parents and teachers throughout the assessment, planning, instructional, and dismissal process.

Teaching: The EL Teacher supports students in acquiring English through the language development approach. EL Teachers create and lesson plans that target specific EL standards based on the student’s proficiency level and grade level and monitor their progress to promote their language acquisition.

Ongoing Tasks:

  • Review EL roster and new enrollees identified as potential ELs through the home language survey
  • Facilitate the ELPT screening and assessments at required times throughout the year
  • Attend SBLC meetings, meetings with parents
  • Communicate with parents regarding the EL program
  • Develop EL Instructional Support Plans that will facilitate language acquisition and access to the general curriculum
  • Create lesson plans aligned with EL standards
  • Create and maintain a schedule for targeted instruction time with school administration and grade-level teachers
  • Attend grade- or subject-level meetings to help plan integrated EL instruction
  • Collaborate with grade-level teachers to determine students’ strengths and weaknesses for lesson planning
  • Collaborate with grade-level teachers to identify and implement any accommodations necessary for the student to access the curriculum
  • Monitor students’ progress through quarterly reports
  • Participate in professional development opportunities

Qualifications, Competencies & Strengths

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • Lousiana Teacher Certification
  • ESL Certification for the grade levels served

Experience:

  • Minimum one year of successful English Learner teaching and/or coordinating, preferably in Louisiana

Special Skills:

  • Ability to prepare appropriate EL instructional support plans
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal rules and regulations pertaining to English Learners
  • Knowledge of Louisiana EL standards and connections to academic standards
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong organization and communication (written and oral)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students and parents

Additional Requirements

Employment is subject to passing a fingerprint criminal history check, from the State Bureau of Criminal Identification.

Physical functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.
