Job Description

GEI s Chicago, Illinois office is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer with at least one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience beyond a college degree. In service of project success and client satisfaction, and under supervision of senior staff project managers, this individual will provide support to ongoing office and field work.

Office tasks will include planning of geotechnical investigations consisting of layout of soil borings, assignment of sampling intervals and methods, development of in-situ test programs, as well as procuring and facilitating the performance of field work. The individual will perform soil index testing in our in-house laboratory for routine geotechnical classification of soil and rock, create test boring logs, and determine geotechnical engineering parameters for use in analyses. The geotechnical engineer s tasks include report writing, data presentation, and development of recommendations for construction of foundations and below grade structures. Analyses will include capacity for deep and shallow foundations, earth retention, global stability of excavations and slopes, seepage assessment, and impacts of construction on adjacent structures.

Field activities will include site reconnaissance prior to investigation; observe and document performance of test borings and installation of groundwater monitoring wells; collection of soil samples, collection of groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil, rock, soil vapor, and air samples. Field work is an excellent opportunity to learn from our senior staff and gain a wide range of experience.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

  • Experience with soil laboratory classification, assembling boring logs and writing geotechnical reports (preferred)
  • Converting field information to final design information such as boring logs, fence diagrams, and subsurface models
  • Develop geotechnical reports using the field data
  • Interaction with subcontractors, clients, and regulatory agency representatives.
  • Assist with proposals and business development activities.
  • Support geotechnical investigation for new construction, test borings, well installations, and technical oversight of subcontractors.
  • Conduct data management and analysis, prepare and review work plans and technical reports, and assist in preparation of presentations and proposals to clients and regulators.
  • Execute project success (scopes, schedules, budgets, deliverables, client satisfaction).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, or Geologic Science. Geology degrees would ideally include coursework in soil mechanics, foundation design, structural analysis, pavement design, and/or hydrogeology.
  • Master of Science (MS) Degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.
  • 1-3+ years of relevant professional experience performing site investigations, laboratory testing, geotechnical analyses, field reconnaissance, and construction oversight.
  • Excellent communication skills and technical report writing.
  • Construction site experience is a plus.
  • Seller/Doer mindset.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Experience with geotechnical software (GINT, Rockworks, LPile, Slope/W, Seep/W, Plaxis) and engineering software (AutoCAD, MathCAD, Surfer, ArcGIS) is a plus.
  • Physical ability to perform field work in Summer and Winter conditions.
  • Valid U.S. driver s license.
