The Lead Investigative Journalist will provide expert level communications and strategic media support for this government program. This position is responsible for all the video content, foreign media source reports and audio broadcasts/recording for this department. This role requires high attention to detail, confidentiality, and excellent communication skills.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide expert level investigative reporting using multiple communication channels all related to the mission of the program
- Uncover and report on stories that relate back to the program mission and objectives
- Communicate stories to targeted audiences through words, images, videos, etc.
- Conduct research to identify potential stories and research legal documents, court records, etc., for story data
- Interview subjects, witnesses, and experts to gather story information and sources
- Write stories, articles, investigative reports, etc., that align with the program mission
- Maintain the mission of the program by providing story ideas, strategy, etc., to the leadership team
- Mentor, guide and assist journalist stringers within the department to enhance the level and frequency of stories related to the program mission
- Use journalism ethics to guide story creation and release
- Seek, find and interview valuable and reliable sources for investigative articles and videos
- Provide expert level mass communications and strategic media support to include editing audio and video
- Monitor foreign media source reports and analyses to stay abreast of major issues in the region
- Maintain and troubleshoot audio, video, and lighting equipment
- Prepare and position audio, video and lighting equipment for broadcasts and recordings
- Connect, tune, and configuring AV setups to ensure high-quality broadcasting
- Investigate and compile data from various sources
- Assist journalists with various events and functions
- Adhere to the reporting norms and practices when covering stories
- Travel as required in the region and to the program office
- Other duties as related to the business functions of FWG Solutions, as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Media, Communications, or a related field
- Master’s degree in related field preferred
Experience:
- Minimum five to seven plus (5-7+) experience as an Investigative Journalist in the industry
Skills & Abilities:
- Expert knowledge of journalism and reporting norms and ethics
- Ability to analyze information and draw conclusions using critical thinking
- Ability to observe surroundings
- Interviewing capabilities
- Familiarity with camera and other recording equipment
- Basic knowledge of video editing tools like Videoshop and Square Fit
- Exceptional written skills and attention to detail under deadline pressure
- High level of organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, as well as on a team
- Superior interpersonal and relationship building abilities
- Proficiency in various Google Suite and Microsoft products
Work Environment:
- Remote with some required onsite visits
- Travel to different locations required
Clearance:
- Secret clearance preferred; ability to obtain/maintain required
Other:
- Fluent in Spanish and/or Brazilian-Portuguese languages strongly preferred
