Who Are We?

Great Hearts Academies is a growing network of 43 public, open-enrollment, tuition-free schools in San Antonio (TX), Dallas/Ft. Worth (TX), Phoenix (AZ), and (opening in fall 2023) Baton Rouge (LA). We currently provide over 25,000 K-12 students with access to a high quality, classical liberal arts education, without the barriers that often come with private prep schools. We gladly prepare our graduates for success in the best universities in the nation, but our main purpose is the formation of the soul, heart, and mind. We believe that the highest goal of education is to become good, intellectually and morally. Teaching certification is not required for general education, and we hire teachers from across all academic disciplines and departments.

GREAT HEARTS PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

At Great Hearts, we seek to cultivate within our students a love for that which is true, good, and beautiful. This pursuit of the transcendental naturally extends to the proper care and use of the physical body. A holistic approach to education addresses all elements of the human person: the intellectual, the emotional, and the physical. Through physical education, students have the opportunity to put virtue into practice while learning more about the inner workings of the human body. Just as we train students’ minds and hearts through authentic engagement in content, we recognize the vital importance of training their bodies. Students improve their creative thinking skills, build on their understanding of the human anatomy, and increase their physical, mental, and social acuity through traditional and non-traditional sport activities. They will experience failure and success throughout the year as they participate in competitive play and work to set and meet personal goals in physical activity. These experiences allow them to develop the tools needed to navigate the mean between the vicious extremes of doubt and arrogance. Such tools are vital to human flourishing.

Students participate in fitness routines, skill practice, review of basic human anatomy, and healthy competitive play.

The particular sports activities (whether traditional or non-traditional) are vehicles for developing within students greater life skills to promote overall physical and emotional health.

The employment of Socratic-type questions engages students in reflecting on their own actions and feelings, thus building within them the capacity to self-monitor and correct. Throughout the years, students receive increasing autonomy in navigating the social dynamics of competitive play. By allowing students to test their negotiation and conflict management skills, we provide them the opportunity to explore the boundaries of social interactions while reflecting on their own progress in a safe environment. This social give and take is a vital part of building healthy interdependence with others.

By providing coaching as students test their negotiation and conflict management skills, we afford them the opportunity to explore the boundaries of social interactions while reflecting on their own progress. Such coaching is best accomplished through Socratic-type questioning which draws out the answers from students rather than simply telling them how they should and should not respond to conflict. This sort of practice in social give and take is vital in building healthy interdependence with others and, as students mature, they will be able to engage successfully with their peers with less coaching from the adults around them.

Certification is not required to teach at any of the Great Hearts Academies. Great Hearts teachers, whether certified or not, demonstrate a commitment to and love for the liberal arts. However, Great Hearts does ask that our teachers be able to demonstrate they are qualified to teach the subjects they are assigned.
