Position Summary:


MEPPI's Power Systems Engineering Division is looking for a Power System Studies Engineer who has experience performing Distribution Planning or Distribution Interconnection Studies using engineering software such as CYME or Synergi Electric. In this role the successful candidate will have the following:

  • Mastery of power system fundamentals
  • Experience performing distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection studies
  • Experience performing distribution planning studies including load interconnection studies
  • Experience performing motor starting analysis
  • Experience performing protective device coordination and arc flash studies for distribution systems


In addition, the successful candidate will perform distribution consulting services and provide distribution planning support within a utility organization.


Essential Functions:

  • Perform distributed energy resource impact/interconnection, distribution planning, load interconnection, and motor start studies utilizing CYME, Synergi Electric, or similar software.
  • Perform studies on renewable resources, distributed energy resources, battery energy storage, relay and protection, performance monitoring, and grid modernization applications utilizing CYME, Synergi Electric, PSCAD, ETAP, Milsoft, and SKM software tools.
  • Increase efficiency and support coworker use of software tools used in power system engineering studies.
  • Prepare, present, and support others in the preparation and delivery of technical reports and presentations to internal and external customers on schedule, within quality standards, with minimal re-work, and positive internal and external feedback. Ensure consistent report quality with grammar and formatting standards.
  • Maintain, enhance, apply, and train others in concepts in grid planning, interconnection, operations, equipment application, and associated history and evolution of standards, orders, guidelines, and tariffs for use in distribution planning studies.
  • Condition and support others in the conditioning of simulation models and judging simulation output based on expected system and equipment capabilities and operation. Estimate and support others in the estimating of system and equipment parameters based on known values, where applicable, or in providing feedback when such values are questionable.
  • Support study initiatives for other MEPPI divisions/departments required.
  • Support performance of transmission studies as necessary.
  • Support development of business opportunities towards achieving division objectives.
  • Support proposals in response to customer specifications, RFP/RFQ, and technical information requests.
  • Prepare and lead technical papers and articles for publication in professional society journals and trade magazines, and for presentation at professional society meetings, industry conferences, and trade exhibitions.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of PSED through interaction with other MEPPI divisions and vendors.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum 3-5 years of experience in electric power engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of electric power systems and equipment operation and control.
  • Advanced knowledge of public and investor-owned utility business planning flow as related to initial feasibility, planning, engineering, implementation, and operations stages.
  • Intermediate organizational, presentation, communication, and technical writing skills required to communicate with customers and employees.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and on several projects simultaneously.
  • Interest in learning different software tools quickly and efficiently.
  • Proficiency with the following programs and modeling tools:
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and related
  • CYME, Synergi Electric, ETAP, Milsoft, and SKM
  • ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN, and CAPE
  • Intermediate knowledge of industry standards and guides (NESC, NERC, IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE).
