Overview

The Coastal Sciences Division, headquartered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Sequim Marine Research Operations on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, is the Department of Energy's only marine research laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation's energy, environmental and security future.

Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, ecotoxicology and biotechnology—and more recently, national and homeland security—the MSL is emerging as a leader in these three areas:
o Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy
o Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources
o Protecting coastal environments from security threats


Responsibilities

This position seeks a motivated researcher to join the Coastal Modeling team within the Coastal Sciences Division to provide analysis support for an ongoing climate-driven resilience project, including inland and coastal risk from tropical cyclones. Responsibilities include data preparation, geospatial analysis, modeling and simulation (data-driven and physics-based).
  • Analyze large climate datasets, including those related to Tropical Cyclones (TCs).
  • Get familiar with PNNL’s Risk Analysis Framework for Tropical Cyclones (RAFT) and conduct analysis with its output; contribute to further development of RAFT.
  • Apply knowledge of statistics, mathematics, machine learning, data modeling to integrate and prepare data; and make discoveries from structured and/or unstructured data.
  • Lead and contribute to the publication and presentation of results in high impact scientific journals and conferences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS/MA in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, or related field with 0 years of experience.
  • MS/MA in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field with a strong interest in Climate data analysis.
  • Experience in analyzing large climate or atmospheric datasets, and familiarity with climate dat.
  • Experience with analysis of TC data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and some experience in contributing to journal papers.
  • Proficiency in coding to solve problems (using languages such as Python, R, Matlab).
  • Experience in applying machine learning methods to solve earth system related predictive problems is a plus.
