Overview:

We are seeking an individual who will focus on research and development in the Weaons Verification Program and Nucelar Varification Program in support of a broad user base. This position resides in the Advanced Radiation Detection, Imaging, Data Science, and Applications (ARDIDSA) Group in the Nuclear Structure & Advanced Technologies Section, Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


ARDIDSA focuses on the development and evaluation of novel and advanced radiation detector and non-destructive evaluation concepts for basic science, nonproliferation, national security, and intelligence organizations. The ARDIDSA group performs the research and technology development to evolve these advanced concepts from conception to demonstration or deployment with particular emphasis on sensitivity and specificity in actual field operations, including use of radiation transport codes to model these systems and analysis codes to isolate signals of interest.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and exercise verification processes with existing verification technologies for future arms control initiatives. For instances where existing technologies are insufficient or inapplicable, the candidate would conceptualize, develop, and demonstrate novel verification technologies.
  • Amalgamate disparate verification activities to construct verification regimes that build confidence in chain-of-custody for information-poor environments.
  • Document results by publication in high impact papers, journals, conference papers and technical reports.
  • Collaborate in a team environment performing project work and developing research proposals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in radiation detection research, monitoring and verification research, or similar area


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A fundamental understanding of nuclear weapons attributes
  • Familiarity with the policies underlying prior arms control agreements/treaties
  • Familiarity with the nuclear fuel cycle
  • Knowledge and familiarity with non-destructive assay techniques and technologies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs


Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.
