The Research Specialist supports the research and evaluation function of a grant-funded project on civic education - performing the tasks and prepare the deliverables associated with
We the People (WTP)
– Civic Education for All Students (CEAS). The grant is a subaward to Georgetown University from the
Center for Civic Education (CCE)
, a non-partisan, non-profit education organization which received the funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
Specifically, they support the research of Dr. Diana Owen regarding the effectiveness of CCE’s teacher professional development and the classroom curriculum intervention. They assist with tasks related to CEAS research initiatives, including collection of data and analysis to determine the effectiveness of CCE’s professional development programs on civics, social studies, and American government, as well as history teachers and the extent to which students gain civic knowledge, dispositions, and skills from the WTP curriculum intervention.
Tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Input and clean teacher and student survey data
  • Add supplemental school data to merge pretest/post test teacher and student data bases
  • Conduct basic statistical analysis of survey data
  • Produce charts/graphs/tables and slide decks of results
  • Transcribe recorded student and teacher interviews and ethnographic data
  • Produce reports and blog posts based on the research
  • Update and maintain the website that hosts the project deliverables that require public access
Work Interactions
Reporting to Dr. Diana Owen, Professor in the Communication, Culture, and Technology Program/Director of the Civic Education Research Lab (CERL)/Principal Investigator for carrying out the grant’s research, the Research Specialist - with minimal supervision - has an integral role in the research function of the University, and to the general goals of supporting large, grant-funded projects.
The specific goal of the CEAS project is to improve access to quality civic education for high need elementary and middle school students (grades 3 through 8) focusing on students with disabilities, students living in poverty, students of color, and English learners. The project is integrally related to Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit social justice mission.

Master’s degree
Preferred qualifications
  • Ability to perform basic statistical analysis using SPSS
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Strong written and verbal English language and editing skills
  • Proficiency with website development and maintenance
