Job Description

Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

Are you enthusiastic about social media as a strategic brand-building channel? Do you see the value of implementing an integrated social media editorial content plan to amplify key brand messages in market? If so, this may be the role for you!

As a member of the VMware Brand Go-to-Market (GTM) team (part of the VMware Brand Experience organization), you will lead the development and execution of an integrated social media strategy, focusing first on integrating organic brand social media amplification with our brand (ad campaign, McLaren Racing sponsorship, VMware Events) paid social, and then expanding to work closely with social media comms teams across VMware to drive an integrated editorial calendar supporting VMware’s key moments in market. In this net-new role, you will also focus on interesting and evolving challenges that include social media governance and enablement.

You will report to the Senior Director of the Brand GTM team, work closely with our Director of Brand GTM Execution, and be a key member of a highly collaborative, fun and productive team.

As a VMware colleague, you will help grow a company that makes meaningful and significant technology solutions and is committed to being “a force for good” in technology. VMware software is essential to the clouds and apps our customers use every day. Our mission is to become the trusted technology foundation for accelerating innovation in an unpredictable world. Your contribution will be essential.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

In the first 6-12 months in this role, you will:

  • Conduct an audit of our corporate social channels and communities, benchmarking VMware against our competitors to glean insights we can apply to ensure our strategy and content remains best in class
  • Assess our share of voice (SOV), sentiment and reach, working with our Brand Insights team to pull this data and extract actionable insights, and then use these insights to evolve our organic social media channel and content strategies
  • Identify which social media channels we should concentrate our efforts on managing and engaging audiences while looking for ways to reduce social media sprawl
  • Develop an integrated social media channel strategy in support of the VMware corporate brand and business objectives
  • Develop an integrated social media content strategy in support of the VMware corporate brand and business objectives
  • Set up a system for streamlining and prioritizing content into a proper editorial roadmap that aligns with our corporate strategy and big moments
  • Cooperate with stakeholders and create an editorial committee responsible for creating and publishing content aligned to the roadmap
  • Leverage our influencer community to increase SOV and reach for the VMware brand
  • Create a closer alliance between organic and paid social stakeholders/teams to leverage content and audiences, as well as to enhance the customer/user journey/experience

Your keys to success in this role include:

  • Working with your Brand GTM team to continue with “discovery” of the social media landscape at VMware, asking the questions and doing the detective work and follow-ups that will lead to good decisions about our social media strategies, practices and policies
  • Thoughtful and thorough documentation of decisions, especially in terms of social media practices and governance
  • Understanding and eventually stewardship of a “hub and spoke” model of social media governance, with the ability to help determine when we need to create enablement materials to support social media execution by various teams across VMware in a brand-compliant and “One VMware” way
  • Developing a content strategy—and managing the execution of it—to support VMware’s key moments in market
  • An ability to flex with change and evolving charters over time
  • Business-to-business experience in a similar role.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your work will be as described above and will require diplomacy, creativeness, analytical skills and solid communications skills. Because social media is a new discipline on the Brand GTM team, and for the initial few months we’ve been focused on “cleaning up” and updating social media channels, accounts, owners, best practices and policies, you will be working closely with the team leaders to map out the next phase of work required. You will also:

  • Develop a social media channel strategy and work closely with our Brand GTM social media channel manager to implement it, in addition to working with other account owners within specific channels
  • Develop a Brand organic social media content strategy, develop the required content and work with our Brand GTM social media channel manager to publish it
  • Establish and lead a social media center of excellence, while helping to define the charter and scope
  • Expand the content strategy to include other teams across VMware and through a joint planning process, develop an editorial calendar and collaborative execution of it
  • Potentially: Publish regular social media intelligence reports

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

You will report to the Sr. Director of the Brand GTM team and will also be a dotted line report to the Director of Brand GTM Execution, while leading the social media channel and content strategy practice. In your role, you will work very closely with colleagues on the Brand Experience enablement team, as well as many other teams across VMware Marketing, Field Marketing and Corporate Communications (for starters). Your “home team” will be the Brand GTM team, which is collaborative, positive, productive and ready to welcome you!

Where is this role located?

Remote: This role is fully remote, allowing you the flexibility to work from the location you feel most productive and comfortable, or the location agreed upon with your hiring manager. You will be expected to live within a number of time zones from your team as defined by your business.

What are the benefits and perks of working at VMware?
