JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Special Collections Cataloging and Metadata Librarian manages cataloging and metadata activities to enhance discovery of and access to the Winterthur Library’s rich multimedia collections. The Special Collections Cataloging and Metadata Librarian creates records for scholarly and special collection items in a wide range of formats and languages in Winterthur’s integrated library system, Virtua, and in OCLC WorldCat according to best practices and standards, and contributes to initiatives to review, enhance, and/or remediate descriptive information.

Compensation: $58,000 - $65,000 annually

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week; occasional weekend and evening hours required

Responsibilities:

  • Develops cataloging and metadata priorities and goals in conjunction with the library team and in support of the library’s and institution’s mission and goals.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging, metadata, and authority work for the library's circulating, reference, and special collections. Develops strategies for representing and connecting collections in the library's various collections management and discovery platforms, including Virtua, ArchivesSpace, and CONTENTdm.
  • Together with colleagues in Collections Management, supports activities and develops workflows to ensure physical control, maintenance, and preservation of library collections materials (circulating collections, special collections, archives).
  • Maintains statistical reporting, generating regular and as-needed statistics in support of library and museum reporting requirements.
  • Works as part of a collaborative team to support library activities, goals, and initiatives, including but not limited to reference and research support, programming, instruction, digital projects, and outreach. Serves on library and institution-wide teams, committees, and working groups as assigned.
  • May supervise interns, graduate assistants, and students who provide support for technical services and other library initiatives.
  • Participates actively in professional development opportunities. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends, issues, and emerging technologies in cataloging and metadata management, including reparative description and critical cataloging.
  • Contributes to library and institutional diversity, equity, access and inclusion projects and initiatives and participates in the planning and implementation of DEAI library cataloging and metadata projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Experience: Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited program, or equivalent degree with experience and/or training that specifically addresses the skills required for the position. Three years professional experience performing original cataloging of rare and unique materials in a range of formats

Preferred Experience: In addition to minimum education requirements, educational training or experience in subject area related to Winterthur’s collections, including history, American studies, art history, English, or related field with five years professional experience performing original cataloging of rare and unique materials in a range of formats, with progressive levels of experience; supervisory experience

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Excellent communication, organization, time management, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special collections cataloging standards, vocabularies, and best practices (RDA, AACR2, DCRM, MARC21, LCSH, LCC, AAT, etc.); familiarity with authority control principles
  • Experience with automated library systems (such as Virtua, Alma/Primo) and common archival, special collections, and digital content management systems (such as ArchivesSpace, CONTENTdm, Islandora, etc).
  • Familiarity with metadata mapping and transformation tools and authority control principles
  • Familiarity with critical cataloging, reparative description, and other library metadata equity initiatives and tools.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English, preferably in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, or Dutch.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work at a computer for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch; to climb ladders and lift, carry, and reach overhead to support materials; to push and pull carts of varying weights; and to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted
  • Ability to tolerate dusty environments
  • Ability to tolerate temperatures of 60-65 degrees for short periods.
