Occupational Summary
Responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies to support major initiatives and projects for the Department of Pediatrics and providing communications and marketing support for Duke Children’s Development. Establishes standards and provides oversight of editorial content for websites, publications, social media, digital newsletters and other internal and external communication channels.
Work Performed
o Develop communication plans to identify objectives, strategies, target audiences, tactics and key messages for initiatives and projects. Consults with stakeholders and utilize quantitative measurement tools to identify needs and ensure objectives are met.
o Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with units and provide guidance related to content for websites, social media, publications and other communication channels to ensure consistency of style, freshness of and usability of content in support of strategic and operational goals. Guidance, depending on unit and/or project, may include consultation, editing, writing and development or oversight of development of multimedia content.
o Establish editorial guidelines and provide oversight for creation of content for various communication channels. Manage freelancers and interns to produce content to support communication plans and goals for the department.
o Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with leaders and key communication offices and staff for Duke University and Duke University Health System and Duke Children’s Development. Coordinate with the Office of News & Communications on media inquiries and news releases.
o Partner with Duke University Office of News and Communication and Global Communication Office on collaborative efforts and news locally, nationally and internationally.
o Provide consultation in the development, review and distribution of internal communications within department.
o Establish a dotted line to The School of Medicine’s Office of Strategic Communications to create better story-gathering capabilities, foster further collaborations, identify additional opportunities for sharing and distributing content, and streamline efficiencies for announcing institutional and departmental changes, advance, awards, honors, and other achievements.
o Lead and facilitate communications strategy along with marketing to meet leadership goals in growing and advancing prioritized services/programs.
o Create, review and distribute internal communications within department including communications from the Chair’s office, Pediatrics Weekly Newsletter, and other internal communications as required.
o Oversee departmental podcast to include scheduling hosts and guests, content creation and managing vendor relationships and internal and external promotion.
o Development and initiate implementation of a metrics driven social media strategy in partnership with Duke Children’s Development.
o Manage the Department of Pediatrics website including content updates, liaising with Duke Health Technical Services, analytics review, and other maintenance as required.
o Coordinate and develop videography requests across the missions. Ensure updated general-use photography as needed.
o Grow, market and promote the Duke Children’s brand to donors through social media and creative content generation to include patient and donor stories.
o Prepare and maintain collateral materials, fact sheets, division brochures, and informational materials to support development efforts. Review development materials annually for updates, accuracy, reprinting or recycling.
o Advertise and market programs and events, attend events as needed.
o Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training: Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English or a related field.
Experience: Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field with experience posting and publishing through print and electronic mediums, including content management systems. Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks.
Preferred Skills: Superior writing skills, strategic thinking and planning, proficiency with social media and data analytics, proposal writing, familiarity with video editing platforms, knowledge of marketing and public relations, website creation, collateral and presentation design, project management, marketing, advertising and public relations. Experience working in an academic environment is preferred.
