Job Title: Project Director
Department: Mother Lode Chapter
Location: Sacramento Mother Lode Chapter and Remote. This position requires an ability to travel.
Reports To: Chapter Director
Supervises: Community Engagement Coordinators, Policy Analyst

Scope: Under the general direction of the Mother Lode Chapter Director and Executive and Conservation Chairs, the Project Director plans, supervises, and manages the activities of the Program, and coordinates the Program with other Sierra Club and Tobacco Control Project (TCP) activities, and performs related work as required. This position is responsible for the Stop Tobacco Toxic Waste in Environmental Justice communities state grant year 4 and 5 scope of work, managing assigned staff, and keeping the team accountable for the reporting periods. This position is currently expected to run through 2025, in line with the state grant, with the possibility of extension should additional funding be secured.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Consults with the Chapter Director, relative to planning, policy and program direction.
  • Manages the implementation of activities of currently funded program(s) to achieve contract compliance.
  • Develops functional program plans; recommends objectives and priorities.
  • Develops and oversees reports, correspondence, promotional and statistical materials for state grant.
  • Works on maintaining grant accounting and balancing the budget.
  • Performs ongoing process and outcome evaluations and recommends modifications.
  • Initiates and monitors program expenditures to accomplish compliance with budget(s) and funding source directives.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, guides and evaluates assigned personnel to ensure necessary competency in the implementation of project activities.
  • Represents the Sierra Club in meetings with committees, community agencies, care providers, and related entities and facilitates inter-agency linkages, communication or collaboration.
  • Initiates contact and coordinates with other statewide, regional, and county-specific programs and activities related to the funded program to maximize effectiveness and minimize duplication.
  • Prepares and coordinates testimony at appropriate public hearings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills, experience, and competencies:

  • Two years of administrative-level experience in developing and managing a health or human services program
  • Expertise or experience in solid waste control, community organizing, or other relevant areas
  • Experience in Public Health, Public Health Administration, or related sectors
  • Competency in monitoring, studying, and researching proposed legislation to determine possible effects on Campaign goals
  • Experience with developing proposals, applications, and/or requests for new or continued funding
  • A valid California Driver’s License and proof of insurance are required. This position will also include: Ability to travel and, if necessary, attend out-of-town meetings or conferences, which could require overnight travel.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following skills, experience, and competencies:

  • Previous experience managing staff
  • OTIS state grant reporting experience
  • Previous tobacco control experience
  • Accounting and budget balancing experience

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $68,500 - $75,000, non-negotiable.

The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience, plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.

This is a category 4 exempt non-represented: confidential, managerial, and supervisory position.
