Position Summary:

The Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is hiring an experienced Program Director to supervise a variety of special programs. These programs currently include BuyAlaska, TREND and the SSBCI Technical Assistance program but will also include any new programs that are funded going forward. This position will be responsible for the delivery and overall success of each program as well as the development of new initiatives, identification of new opportunities and the creation of new partnerships and contracts.

Duties:

10%Other short term programs and projects that support the SBDC mission, such as providing training, and participation in various entrepreneurial events, and similar special projects or programs. Serve as a subject matter expert on the SSBCI Equity program.Essential
10%Supervise Program Managers and staff supporting the special programs. Manage day to day operations of the Program Managers. Oversee general HR needs of the programs and projects under this position’s purview.Essential
80%Oversee a wide range of special programs such as BuyAlaska, TREND and SSBCI Technical Assistance programs along with other special projects and programs housed within the Alaska SBDC. Evaluate and monitor the special projects and programs of the Alaska SBDC to ensure that they are following federal and University program policies and objectives. Review data, prepare and submit narrative or statistical reports, and consult regarding recommendations. Devise evaluation strategies to monitor performance and determine the need for improvements. Ensure programs’ operations and activities adhere to legal guidelines and internal policies. Develop program details as well as plan and perform the administration of SBDC Special Programs’ activities with responsibility for defining objectives, priorities, strategic plan, and deadlines. Develop and track all metrics/goals associated with the various programs and projects under this position and report on those metrics to the relevant funding agency and Alaska SBDC leadership. Identify and apply for new funding opportunities through the development of new programs and projects or through the expansion of existing programs and projects. This can and should include federal, state, local and private sector funding sources as well as new partnerships, contracts or earned income opportunities. With the SBDC State Director and other staff, provide support with fiscal management functions and prepare, develop, and review grant proposals related to SBDC special programs. Collaborate to provide new educational tools and resources for use by the special programs for training and advising. Identify new areas of need in business and entrepreneurship training and education or new tools necessary to grow Alaska’s economy.Essential

Both in-state and out of state travel is required. Attendance of meetings that fall outside of the 8-5, M-F hours of operation are sometimes required.



Preferred Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field and six (6) or more years of progressively responsible experience leading business development support and/or entrepreneurship and project management leadership. Specific and relatable prior program management experience desired. Applicants having an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience are also considered. Strong communications/ media experience required.

Required Education or Training:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience working with programs designed to assist small businesses at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Experience and knowledge working in both university and/or government environments. Must fully understand grant management expectations, processes, and procedures.
  • History/experience partnering with Alaska SBDC and its programs
  • Strong project development/management skills
  • Ability to build successful teams, supervise staff, and resolve interpersonal conflict.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and direct workload, work under pressure, managing multiple deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Knowledge of processes for conducting research and managing data for program evaluation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups, working as a team member.
  • Ability to lead, and supervise staff as well as indirectly supervise peers across a complex organization.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate effectively the policies, rules, and regulations of a complex federal program that may face ongoing changes to said rules and policies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Significant computer operating skills required. Significant understanding of Word and Excel. Extensive Cloud technology, digital file maintenance and Google Workplace Suite experience required.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 82, based on education and experience.
