Position Summary

The Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education (GCCHE) at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health welcomes applications for a Project Manager. The Consortium’s mission is to ensure that all health professionals throughout the world – including clinical doctors, nurses, and public health leaders and practitioners – will be trained to prevent, reduce, and respond to the health impacts of climate change. Since 2015, the Consortium has been leading this global initiative, now with over 300 member universities and over 100 partner organizations to educate health professionals on the health impacts of climate change. Within the Columbia University Campus, a leading global research institution, the Consortium is poised to lead the development of campus-wide health professional education and engage with the newly formed Climate School on health matters. Specifically, the Consortium aims to:

  • Disseminate best scientific and educational practices.
  • Advise on the development of geographically relevant curricula on the health impacts of climate change.
  • Engage stakeholders to develop and update core competences for all health professionals on the health impacts of climate change.
  • Convene conferences and working groups among members in all global regions.
  • Engage policy makers, professional societies and health institutions to integrate climate and health knowledge at all levels of health practice.
  • Support the development of global academic partnerships to foster mutual learning, particularly in under-resourced countries.
  • Foster the creation of cross-institutional research partnerships that lead to the scientific advances that can be shared across nations.
  • Ensure a cadre of highly trained health professionals to lead on this issue.

Responsibilities

The Consortium is seeking a full-time Senior Project Director who will be responsible for overseeing project management and partnership development in collaboration with GCCHE staff. The Senior Project Director will be responsible for program/project oversight, implementation, monitoring, and assessment. This will include all day-to-day activities necessary for successful project implementation. Additionally, the Senior Project Director will attend meetings of GCCHE working groups and coordinating committees and partake in research and scholarly publication relevant to best educational practices on climate and health.

The Senior Project manager should have excellent communication and leadership skills, a breadth of experience managing and implementing health capacity building activities, a strong background in climate change and health science, and experiencing managing multiple projects simultaneously.

The Senior Project Manager will also be responsible for providing strategic support to its constituent member organizations. In partnership with the Consortium Director, Advisory Council, and Coordinating Committee, the Senior Project Manager is charged with coordinating the operations of the Consortium consistent with the guidance, policies and goals established by the Advisory Council.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of four years of relevant work experience in Climate change, public health, health education and capacity building, environmental sustainability, or similar fields.
  • A strong record of successful project management and implementation, ideally with experience working with academic institutions and public entities.
  • A strong technical understanding of, and interest in, the relationship between public health and climate change.
  • Strong spoken and written communications skills.
  • The ability to independently manage and draft policy and technical reports and communications materials.
  • A high degree of organizational skill in organizing and managing expert groups, scheduling regular conference calls and/or online meetings, developing special events for in-person gatherings, and tracking communications among Consortium members.
  • Experience engaging with policymakers and the media on a variety of public health or environmental issues.
  • Independence, confidence, and maturity in dealing with international experts in public health, climate science, and education.
  • Experience working with website developers and programmers.
  • Significant project management experience.
  • Experience building networks across a broad range of disciplines and geographies, both within and outside the health sector.
  • Experience with events organization and management.
  • A willingness to travel and flexibility with regard to conducting tele-meetings outside of normal working hours (on a regular basis) to accommodate the time zones of the Consortium’s global network.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent, with 5 years of experience working on public health issues. Clinicians are encouraged to apply.
