Job Description

The Senior Researcher independently plans, coordinates, conducts and oversees fieldwork and data collection for the ‘Verbal autopsy: Reimaging data and automated course assignment (using ALPHA network data)’ project sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; analyzes the research data that is obtained, evaluates the findings, prepares research papers, presents the data at conferences, assists in developing future research goals, and helps prepare proposals for new funding; supports research to improve the verbal autopsy method for ascertaining cause of death in populations without routine vital statistics systems, mostly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America; requires sociolinguistic study of the verbal autopsy interview in various socio-cultural settings in Africa and formulation of recommendations for how to improve the interview and language processing involved with both the interview and post-processing of the data.


Required Qualifications

Master's Level Degree in an appropriate social science or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required. Extensive experience as a professional translator and interpreter working with verbal autopsy questionnaires and interviews.

Desired Qualification
Doctoral Degree; knowledge of WHO verbal autopsy standards; experience working in rural settings in Africa; ability to travel frequently to East and Southern Africa; experience with the `health and demographic surveillance system’ study design highly desired; experience developing health practice-related recommendations and/or training materials for dissemination in African settings highly desired.

The pay range for this job profile is $31,350-$41,800. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
