Digital SRE and Operations ensures industry leading performance and operational excellence across all channels of costco.com, including desktop and mobile. The Solution Architect supports the performance, reliability and achievement of Service Level Objectives of all products and platform services required for Costco’s digital presence. This role will be hyper focused on improving performance and stability of the existing landscape as well as participate in the design of foundational architecture, processes, and tools for Costco’s future digital modernization.

ROLE


Designs, develops and ensures compliance to architectural standards throughout the lifecycle.

Analyzes the Business-IT environment (run, grow, and transform the business) to detect critical deficiencies, and recommend solutions for improvement (systems of record, differentiation, and innovation).

Consults with application and infrastructure development projects, and identifies when it is necessary to modify projects to accommodate the solution architecture.

Collaborates with Enterprise Architects to balance needs between Solution Architectural Guardrails.

Identifies the organizational impact (Skills, processes, structures, or culture) and financial impact of the solutions architecture.

Conducts design reviews to validate alignment with architecture.

Modifies solution architecture to support changing business or technology requirements.

Documents solutions architecture design and analysis work, and communicates architectural decisions that impact solutions.

Designs methodology that consistently yields the right level of technical design documentation and develops technical solutions that conform both to customer requirements and information development standards.

Adheres to Costco’s Architectural Framework and Governance model.

Researches and understands technical requirements, trends, and strategies for Costco Digital. Identifies new technologies and optimization tools as required.

Identifies, implements and optimizes tooling for the Development and Ops teams to improve efficiency, velocity, and stability.

Analyzes technical risks and advises on risk mitigation strategies.

Assesses project information to understand the scope, the current IT and business environment, objectives and priorities. Designs and implements solutions to evaluate and improve production readiness of systems, infrastructure, interfaces, applications, and platforms. Responsible for the technical content (architecture and design), integrity and quality of the solution.

Ensures for the delivery of the solution as specified (by requirements and architecture).

Architects micro-services for self-service performance and scalability evaluation.

Partners with Enterprise Architecture and peer architects/engineers to develop strategies and standards for Digital.

Participates in Architecture and Engineering forums; performs design reviews.

Participates in Development Modernization and adoption of emerging/modern technologies.

Aligns with the security standards and guidelines to ensure systems are secure and protected.

Analyzes available assets (frameworks, reference architectures, etc.) to bridge the gap between as-is architecture and to-be architecture. Creates transitional architecture views as part of solution design in support of modernization strategy.

Defines system use cases and requirements. Evaluates non-functional requirements for performance, scalability and technical acceptance criteria.

Creates high-level models that guide solution architecture, including component, context, data-flow security, data, services, infrastructure, deployment and integration viewpoints.

REQUIRED

Minimum of 10 years in an engineering and/or architect role.

5+ years’ proven experience in software engineering - focusing on development, automation, performance.

Experience architecting and designing Digital Commerce environments with component systems and API services, such as Payment gateways, Order Management Systems, Content Management systems, User generated content, Analytics.

Experience with Cloud and on premise automation, storage, network, and monitoring technology.

Advanced knowledge of Akamai or other CDN solutions.

Ability to communicate trade-offs and transactional states with technical and business teams.

Proven skills in leadership, relationship building, negotiation, collaboration, advocacy, governance, and consensus building.

High level of verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders without authority and engage with at all levels of the organization including C-suite.

Thorough understanding of and experience with Agile principles and SAFe methods. Ability to make architecture changes in a dynamic agile environment.

Willing to share knowledge and coach others in technical and business topics.

Innovative, creative, and extremely responsive with a strong sense of urgency.

Scheduling flexibility to meet the needs of the business, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Recommended

Retail industry experience.

Knowledge with WebSphere Commerce, AIX, DB2.

Knowledge of different enterprise supply chain fulfillment systems (e.g. ERP, WMS).

Solution Architecture Professional Certification (e.g., IASA CITA-F, CITA-A or higher).

Experiencing using TOGAF as an architecture design methodology.

Proficient in service oriented architecture (SOA), messaging, object-oriented programming concepts, multi-tiered distributed component based technology, legacy infrastructure platforms and technologies, and enterprise service bus.

Pay Range: $145,000 - $180,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) eligible
