The Vector-Borne Disease Lab at the MaineHealth Institute for Research, Scarborough, ME is now hiring four (4) temporary Student I positions to assist on one of two grant-funded projects. Your position might be as a seasonal technician to support field research on a community-wide tick control program on an offshore island in Maine’s midcoast. Or your position might be as a Student I, supporting field and laboratory work to support our program specializing in mosquito and arthropod collection and identification. In either project, you will be trained and mentored and will work under both general supervision and independently, with an emphasis on mosquito and tick identification. Our Student I’s will assist in field and lab operations for mosquito and tick surveillance efforts in Maine, including field surveys for ticks and mosquitoes statewide. They will perform microscopic identification of trapped mosquito species, and ticks submitted from the public. Attention to detail is required, as is consistent attendance. You will maintains reports and records, prepare and clean lab equipment, perform data entry, and complete miscellaneous lab and clerical tasks. You must have the ability to work independently, to communicate effectively, and to work well with coworkers and the public. Student I’s – with all proper safety training – may be required to transport, mix, handle or use hazardous materials or noxious chemicals. Note that this work will require you to perform many tasks outdoors, under varying weather and physical conditions.
A high school diploma is required, and enrollment in a college or university with coursework in entomology, biology, environmental sciences, or related subject is desired. You must have a valid Maine driver’s license and transportation.
