Job Description: Founded in 2013, the Maine North Atlantic Development Office (MENADO) is a closely affiliated subprogram of the Maine International Trade Center (MITC), itself a public-private partnership of the businesses of the state and the Department of Economic and Community Development.

This position is professional services work leading the work of MENADO, primarily the advancement of foreign direct investment, business development, and increased trade between the State of Maine and the North Atlantic region. The MENADO Director is a key member of the Maine International Trade Center’s leadership team, reporting directly to the President of MITC in their capacity as State Director of International Trade, and collaborates with other state and federal government stakeholders as appropriate.

As one of the most visible MITC and DECD employees, this position requires exceptional business acumen, political savvy, and organizational and strategic agility.


Representative Tasks:

  • Responsible for all investment and trade efforts in the designated territories of MENADO.
  • Generates economic opportunities for Maine businesses and industries within the MENADO territory, and in collaboration with MITC staff, communicates and cultivates those opportunities;
  • Actively promotes the state’s economic, business, cultural, and transportation assets to partner organizations and businesses within the MENADO territory.
  • Maintains relationships with appropriate regional stakeholders to ensure Maine is connected to their initiatives and retains its leading role in East Coast U.S./Arctic alliances and developments.
  • As an organizational leader within MITC, actively aligns strategy and work plans to that of the Trade Center, including staff engagement and mentorship.
  • Coordinates MENADO Advisory group that reports back on trade, investment, cultural/tourism, and Arctic developments to DECD, MITC, and the Governor’s office.

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Proven flexible leadership ability, thriving in environments requiring effectively prioritize and juggle multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience creatively directing and/or directly executing project, planning, and/or policy analysis activities.
  • Ability to successfully travel nationally and internationally.
  • Exceptional communication skills and experience, both with diverse business cultures and with senior executives.
  • Experience in business development, such as leading trade missions, industry events, or trade shows; and/or working with and implementing investment attraction programs.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, International Studies, Economics or a related field and (10) years of progressively responsible, professional level experience in business administration or business-related economic development. A background in natural resource based industries is helpful, but not required.
